ISLAMIC MATHEMATICS - AL-KHWARIZMI

Muhammad Al-Khwarizmi (c.780-850 CE)

One of the first Directors of the House of Wisdom in Bagdad in the early 9th Century was an outstanding Persian mathematician called Muhammad Al-Khwarizmi. He oversaw the translation of the major Greek and Indian mathematical and astronomy works (including those of Brahmagupta) into Arabic, and produced original work which had a lasting influence on the advance of Muslim and (after his works spread to Europe through Latin translations in the 12th Century) later European mathematics.

The word “algorithm” is derived from the Latinization of his name, and the word "algebra" is derived from the Latinization of "al-jabr", part of the title of his most famous book, in which he introduced the fundamental algebraic methods and techniques for solving equations.

Perhaps his most important contribution to mathematics was his strong advocacy of the Hindu numerical system, which Al-Khwarizmi recognized as having the power and efficiency needed to revolutionize Islamic and Western mathematics. The Hindu numerals 1 - 9 and 0 - which have since become known as Hindu-Arabic numerals - were soon adopted by the entire Islamic world. Later, with translations of Al-Khwarizmi’s work into Latin by Adelard of Bath and others in the 12th Century, and with the influence of Fibonacci’s “Liber Abaci” they would be adopted throughout Europe as well.

Khwarizmi’s Wisdom

Somebody forwarded to me a wonderful equation on Human Beings written by Al-Khwarizmi, the famous mathematician, and I found it relevant.

He was asked about Human Beings in general and he answered using an equation which went like this:

If a person had ethics and manners then s/he is = 1

If this person was beautiful then add a zero to the one = 10

If s/he had money, then add another zero = 100

If s/he had a good family and relatives, then add another zero = 1000

If you lose number 1 which is ethics and manners, the value of that person is lost and what remains are the zeros which have no value at all.

Simple, wonderful and wise, isn’t it?

no queda nada, solamente delincuentes corruptos
y malas personas.

Without his contributions the world and science as we know it would have taken much longer to evolve.

Fascinating stuff. Truly a wise man. Why are there so few people of wisdom in our time? Would love to have heard this sage on TED! Thanks for enlightening Javier 🐝 beBee

Great read Javier 🐝 beBee sir, Thanks for sharing and finding the inventor of Algebra. This article is interesting for me because I hate this during my early school days.. and now I wish to go back and study again :)

Javier 🐝 beBee A very interesting buzz on Algebra. I first hated it the most in school but then found an awesome teacher who made me fall in love with mathematics altogether. I ended up getting the 2nd best overall academic award in School :) Without Ethics and Manners, the value of a person is lost. #VeryTrue

I'm guessing that marital problems are the reason that he invented algebra, because he couldn't find his 'x' and nobody would tell him 'y'. 😂
