This is a hands-on role covering two areas. Most of it is performance engineering: tuning queries, procedures and indexes. The rest is production DBA work: backups, security, maintenance and database health. You'll also be the go-to database expert when clients run into performance problems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Read execution plans and use Extended Events / SQL Server Profiler to find bottlenecks
- Design and implement indexing strategies
- Troubleshoot deadlocks, blocking and other concurrency problems
- Build and maintain ETL and data transformation processes
- Manage backups, user roles, permissions and security policies
- Automate maintenance (index rebuilds, statistics updates, integrity checks) and manage scheduled jobs
- Keep databases consistent and healthy, and fix issues as they come up
- Help clients with root cause analysis when they hit timeouts or slow response times
- Advise on database architecture and performance improvements
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field
- 5+ years of hands-on experience developing and programming with Microsoft SQL Server
- 5+ years of progressively responsible experience designing, building and maintaining information systems
- Strong skills in T-SQL, query tuning and diagnosing performance issues
- Experience working in Agile teams
- Fluent English (required)
NICE TO HAVE
- Microsoft TFS / Azure DevOps
- SSIS or other ETL tools
- French or another UN official language
WHY JOIN
- Work for a United Nations agency on systems used by governments worldwide
- An international, multicultural workplace at the UN in Vienna
- A role where your performance tuning has a visible impact
