Job description
As an Intermediate Software Engineer at ELMO, you will play a key role in building secure, reliable and scalable products that help HR teams across ANZ and the UK. You will work in a modern engineering environment where human expertise is amplified by AI tools, and you will be accountable for every line of code that reaches our production systems—whether it is written by you or generated by AI.
- Own stories and epics end to end, from understanding business intent and refining requirements with Product Owners, through design, implementation, testing and deployment, to supporting live services in production.
- Deliver high‑quality, well‑documented, and well‑tested solutions that meet our architectural standards and security expectations, including OWASP Top 10 and internal security policies.
- Orchestrate AI agents to handle standard tasks, construct effective prompts, and critically review AI‑generated output for correctness, maintainability, performance and security.
- Contribute to architectural conversations and follow established patterns. Ensure edge cases and error paths are thoroughly covered by automated tests. Help the team deliver reliable, maintainable solutions efficiently.
- Take an active role in incident management, using logs and diagnostics to troubleshoot issues and resolve incidents across your team’s applications.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by helping identify risks, improve documentation, share knowledge, and refine team processes.
Skills and Experience
Technical skills
- Demonstrated software engineering experience in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
- Experience delivering technical work end-to-end, including deployment and support of live systems.
- Practical experience using AI tools to generate maintainable, production-ready code and support problem-solving.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining applications using PHP and React.
- Sound understanding of architectural patterns, service design principles, and software development best practices, including SOLID, REST and OOP.
- Ability to contribute to code reviews, apply sound engineering principles, and maintain code quality.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including log analysis, issue investigation, and production support.
- Ability to use AI tools effectively and independently, including writing effective prompts and sharing learnings with peers.
