About the Role

We're seeking a hands-on Application Security Engineer (Freelance) to join our client's mission-critical healthcare environment in Zaventem, Belgium. This is a freelance opportunity for 11 months, designed for those who thrive on impact and want to drive real change in application security.

You'll be at the heart of a collaborative, high-stakes environment, working alongside top-tier development, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams to secure the software that matters most.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze and remediate vulnerabilities identified through SAST, DAST, and SCA tools

Perform secure code reviews and assess security architecture

Fix issues in application code, libraries, and configurations

Integrate security tools and processes into CI/CD pipelines (DevSecOps approach)

Support developers in adopting secure coding practices

Participate in threat modeling and security design reviews

Drive reduction of technical debt and continuous improvement of security maturity

Collaborate with infrastructure security teams on OS-level patching and broader security initiatives

Technical Skills & Environment

Proficient in CI/CD pipelines (GitLab, DevOps)

Experience with Kubernetes and Docker environments

Hands-on with security testing tools (e.g., Qualys, pentest reports)

Strong coding skills in Java, , TypeScript, Angular, .NET, Python (varies by application)

Deep understanding of OWASP Top 10 and secure coding frameworks

Familiarity with local data center infrastructure

What We're Looking For

Proven software engineering background — able to read and modify production code

Experience in application security or secure software development

Solid grasp of OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities and remediation techniques

Hands-on experience with vulnerability remediation

Comfortable with CI/CD and DevSecOps practices

Ability to distinguish real issues from false positives

Collaborative mindset — able to work closely with both developers and security teams

Nice to Have

Experience with threat modeling

Knowledge of cloud security

Exposure to vulnerability management processes

Language Proficiency

Professional working proficiency

Other Requirements

Freelance position with a defined project duration (ASAP – 31/12/2026)

Mainly on-site in Zaventem, Belgium (up to 2 remote days per week possible after onboarding)
