Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join our team working on the Flemish Government account, based at the Atos office in Zaventem.

You will design, build and maintain robust, secure and maintainable Java applications and services that support Flemish public-sector digital services. You will work in a multidisciplinary team alongside analysts, architects, testers, DevOps engineers and the customer's stakeholders, taking technical ownership of your work and helping to raise the quality bar of the team.

As Dutch is the working language with the customer and end users, fluent Dutch is a requirement for this role.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Development and Delivery

• Design, develop, test and maintain Java back-end applications, REST APIs and integrations using modern frameworks such as Spring Boot.
• Translate functional requirements and user stories into well-designed, scalable and maintainable technical solutions.
• Write clean, well-tested code, with a strong focus on unit, integration and automated testing.
• Analyse and resolve complex technical issues, including performance, security and production incidents.

Technical Leadership and Quality

• Contribute to technical design decisions, architecture discussions and the selection of tools and frameworks.
• Perform code reviews, promote coding standards and best practices, and share knowledge within the team.
• Coach and support junior and medior developers.
• Ensure solutions respect security, privacy (GDPR) and accessibility requirements applicable to government services.

DevOps and Operations

• Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines, build automation and deployment processes.
• Work with containerisation and cloud or on-premises platforms to deploy and run applications reliably.
• Support monitoring, logging and troubleshooting to keep applications stable, observable and supportable.
• Take part in release planning, technical documentation and handover to operations teams.

Collaboration

• Work in an Agile (Scrum/Kanban) team and take part in planning, refinement, daily stand-ups and retrospectives.
• Communicate clearly in Dutch with customer stakeholders, business analysts and end users, and in English with international colleagues where needed.
• Work closely with the customer to understand their needs, propose improvements and manage expectations.

Job Requirements

Technical Competencies and Experience

• 5+ years of professional experience in Java development in enterprise environments.
• Strong expertise in Java (11/17/21) and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security).
• Solid experience designing and building REST APIs and microservices or service-oriented architectures.
• Good knowledge of relational databases and SQL (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle) and ORM frameworks such as JPA/Hibernate.
• Experience with automated testing (JUnit, Mockito, integration and end-to-end testing) and test-driven practices.
• Experience with Git, Maven or Gradle, and CI/CD tooling (e.g. Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
• Working knowledge of Docker and container orchestration (Kubernetes or OpenShift).
• Good understanding of application security principles (e.g. OWASP), authentication and authorisation (OAuth2, OpenID Connect, SAML).
• Familiarity with Agile ways of working and with software quality tooling such as SonarQube.
