Jim's Nausea about the word "Journey"
It is the first time a pictorial has evoked a Paradox Wisdom, but the one Jim Murray produced today had quite the dramatic effect at a personal level. Jim describes the use of the word "Journey" as sickening people but for me it was an opportunity for me to think about my own use of the "Learning Journey" metaphor. While it did not make me want to puke Jim's graphic did remind me of Mr. Creosote - which is the Monty Python character who vomits a lot. It is in watching the hilarious Monty Python video that the word "Pathway" came to mind.
Pathways is the new name for the new Toastmasters program which will launch at the end of this year or sometime next year. My Toastmaster club represents my own OFFLINE learning pathway, just as what I engage here, Linkedin and various other sites is my ONLINE learning. So it did not take rocket science for me to make the shift from Learning Journey to Learning Pathway. In so doing it might remove some of the nostalgia with "journey" but it is a good shift :
The nostalgia of "journey" comes from the "Kung Fu" television series, but when I came to think about it, the person who wanted to play Caine in Kung Fu which was Bruce Lee had his life cut short in mysterious circumstances. The person who did play Caine in the series was David Caradine. Caradine did not die in mysterious circumstances, he was simply trying to have a really good time and his apparatus kind of failed. Less said the better about that.
This is how Toastmasters describe their new Pathways program :
It is nice and slick marketing but the practical consequence has been a very slow pilot roll out and trying to get a network to buy into the notion of Pathways, one that has been operating as Community Clubs ever since 1924. I seem to to be one of the few members genuinely excited about this shift to a more e-learning based system which will operate through a portal called "basecamp". For most however, a very large percentage have not even heard about it and the one's that do are not really clued in about what it is. For the most traditional minded Toastmaster this will come as a bit of a culture shock, but for me it is business as usual.
It is good that I came across Jim's graphic because that is exactly why I called this a learning journey - a shift that changes the pathway - so of course, why not then call it a pathway, and Jim said he likes how it implies control, for me I like how it evokes the way water flows and if Bruce Lee never got the part for Kung Fu, he did get film work that led him to a classic dialogue about water [which was originally film script in one of his movies]
