Role Description

Phathom Technologies is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to serve as the primary technical authority and Owner’s Representative for the development of our first pilot plant located in Nova Scotia. In this role, you will lead the review, validation, and approval of engineering packages produced by our third-party engineering partners and modular fabrication vendors.

You are the bridge between Phathom’s process requirements and the engineering and procurement by our contractors. This role can be remote, but main office in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Pilot location is in Port Hawkesbury.

Key Responsibilities (Oversight & Governance)

• Technical Review & Approval: Act as the final internal sign-off for mechanical deliverables, including P&IDs, 3D models, and Equipment Data Sheets provided by third parties.
• Vendor Interface Management: Manage the "battery limit" interfaces between modular skids and the balance-of-plant infrastructure designed by our EPC/Design partners.
• Bulk Solids Subject Matter Expert: Provide owner-side validation of limestone handling systems. Ensure that vendor-led silo designs and feed systems meet Phathom’s reliability and maintenance standards.
• Change Management: Review and approve Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and technical queries from fabricators to ensure no "scope creep" or compromise in mechanical integrity.
• FAT/SAT Leadership: Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at vendor facilities and oversee Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) at the pilot plant location.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside our 3-person Chemical Engineering team to ensure mechanical designs satisfy process requirements and safety standards (HAZOP/LOPA).

Required Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
• Experience: 5 years in industrial plant design, mineral processing, or heavy chemical environments. Experience specifically in a "Lead" or "Owner’s Engineer" capacity where you have managed third-party engineering firms preferred.
• Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of mechanical stress analysis, fluid dynamics, and bulk solids handling (limestone experience is a major plus).
• The "Atlantic" Edge: While this role is remote-friendly, preference will be given to candidates based in Atlantic Canada to facilitate periodic site visits to the Port Hawkesbury area and collaboration with local stakeholders.
