The ICP has the authority of the Medical Staff and Governing Body to take necessary steps to prevent and/or control the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents in the patient, staff, and visitor populations.
The Infection Control
Practitioner (ICP) is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, and reporting of hospital-acquired infections; educating employees about infection control; and the development of organizational infection control standards that meet state and federal regulatory and accrediting bodies, CDC, OSHA, and APIC guidelines.
- Identifies and reports healthcare-associated infections (HAI) monthly in the NHSN database, as mandated by the State of MD
- Identifies reportable conditions such as tuberculosis and reports to State Health Department
- Communicates MDROs to facility Units/Departments, including in the patient information system, and communicates to outside facilities as needed
- Coordinates with Corporate Education and unit-based education personnel in providing education on infectious illnesses and infection control issues to employees, including orientation
- Conducts monthly and annual in-services to designated high-risk areas
- Reviews hospital testing/screening procedures. Reviews and updates hospital Infection Control policies and procedures at least every 3 years and maintains an up-to-date Infection Control Manual
- Maintains resource file of information for all departments and serves as a resource person to departments within the facility to ensure patient/employee safety and continuity of care as related to Infection Control

- Participates in Collaboratives, other Performance Improvement initiatives, and committees as required and needed to reduce HAI and MDRO transmission
- Provide leadership related to investigating Nosocomial outbreaks and clusters. Recommend interventional strategies for containing and/or reducing outbreaks
