Dear Hiring Committee,
I am interested in a summer student position at your organization. I am currently completing my second year in a Bachelor of Commerce Program, majoring in entrepreneurship, at the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University. I’m interested in science, business and visual art and aspire to combine my skill set in a future career.
In 2020, I took a 4-week certificate course from DECCA Ontario with 200 other entrepreneurial-minded students from across Canada. I learned about defining problems, how to generate ideas and solutions, validating solutions, how to build a business, and paying attention to the customer base, among other topics.
I am studious and applied, currently with a 11 GPA (A average) and on the Dean’s Honour roll. I was successful in my application, interview and portfolio submission to highly competitive Canterbury Visual Art Program, where I attended for 1.5 years.
The past two summer 2021 & 2022, I was employed with the City of Ottawa as a Wading Pool attendant, supervising children, adults, and persons with disabilities in and around wading pools and City Park property. I ensured City of Ottawa policies, safety and COVID procedures were followed, administered first aid to patrons in need and responded to public inquiries. During the summer of 2020 I worked with the National Capital Commission (NCC) as an Attendant for the Road Closure Program.
I was constantly interacting with the public in both official languages, offering directions and assistance. I worked in all types of inclement weather (rain, heat) and reported security and public safety concerns to my manger. I followed COVID-19 protocols and supported the public in following the provincial COVID guidelines.
I am a visual artist and have learned different styles of painting with acrylic and watercolor sketching live models and still life as well as sculpturing with different mediums including paper mache, clay and wax. More recently I have developed my digital art skills using various digital programs and Adobe photoshop.
Instructing youth in the Nakkertok cross country ski Adventure Program for 3 years developed my patience, leadership and ability to work well with different age group. My piano classes over the past 9 years improved my ability to commit. My martial arts training and Adventure Leadership program have also taught me focus, strength and taking instructions.
I have excellent communication and computer skills and am proficient in all MS Office applications. I am confident speaking clearly and confidently to others, which is critical in a job that requires listening to and speaking with people. I have applied these skills, for example, when working with the Ottawa Food Bank as a volunteer.
I would enjoy putting my skills to use under your employment. I'm particularly interested in research, synthesizing and presenting findings, and visualizing information. I have excellent analytical and problems solving skills, good judgement and very much enjoy being part of a team.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Nico Ramirez-Manchur
