Professional Barrister & Solicitor who excels in developing interpersonal client and team relationships with extensive experience in labour law, employment law and civil litigation
I am a Barrister & Solicitor in Ontario and I am interested in pursuing the Litigation Lawyer position at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. My passion for litigation and dispute resolution will strongly align with the skills required for the position.
As an Associate Lawyer at Rogers & Company Barristers & Solicitors, I practiced in fast-paced employment law litigation. For instance, I was able to reach a settlement on a wrongful dismissal claim for reasonable termination notice. During the mediation, one of the main challenges was the apprehensiveness of our clients in attainment an appropriate amount of damages.
My strategic recommendations maintained that our client was entitled to extensive notice given their advanced age, executive position, considerable salary, long length of service, and the difficulty of obtaining similar employment. Through this leverage, we favourably secured an amount of compensation and damages that our client was ecstatic about.
As a Content Developer with Watershed Human Resources Solutions, I created human resources material for labour/employment law topics. Frequent subjects included human rights, attendance management as well as health/safety procedures. In addition, I drafted employee handbooks to promote positive workplace relations and compliance processes for Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Accessibility for Ontarians With Disabilities Act, and Human Rights Code, and the Labour Relations Act.
At the Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat, Legal Services Branch (Ministry of the Attorney General) I was frequently involved in labour/employment arbitrations. I was heavily invested in preparing a key witness for their testimony in a suspension dispute hearing. I had immediately established an excellent rapport with the witness who was very nervous.
The witness requested from my supervising lawyer that I continue with the case and I was trusted with drafting detailed questions for examinations. This testimony was instrumental in strengthening our case and the experience enhanced my own conviction in the importance of building trusted client relationships.
I am determined to apply my knowledge and to accept challenges at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
