To provide clinical leadership, ensure efficient unit/ ward/ department operations, maintain high standards of patient care, manage nursing staff, and act as a key liaison between nursing staff and hospital management.
- Oversee and coordinate all nursing activities within the Medical, Surgical, Intensive Care Unit, Outpatient units and wards.
- Provide direct clinical guidance, mentorship, and supervision to nursing staff (Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Nurse Aides).
- Ensure adherence to established nursing policies, procedures, protocols, and clinical guidelines (hospital-specific & Nursing Council of Kenya standards).
- Monitor and evaluate the quality and safety of patient care delivery.

- Assist in complex patient care situations and emergencies.
- Prepare staff duty rosters, ensuring adequate and appropriate staffing levels 24hours seven days a week.
- Manage staff attendance, leave requests, and timekeeping.
- Conduct performance appraisals for nursing staff within the unit.
- Identify staff training needs and facilitate in-service education or recommend external training.
- Address staff performance issues, grievances, and disciplinary matters in collaboration with Human Resource and senior nursing management.
- Foster a positive, professional, and collaborative team environment.
- Mentor new staff and student nurses on placement.
- Manage and control inventory of medications, medical supplies, equipment, and consumables within the unit.
- Ensure equipment is functional, well-maintained, and reported for repair promptly.
- Monitor utilization of supplies to prevent wastage and shortages.
- Participate in the requisition process for necessary supplies and equipment.
- Ensure the delivery of compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care.
- Address patient and family concerns, complaints, and feedback promptly and effectively.
- Promote and maintain patient safety standards (such as, infection prevention & control, fall prevention, medication safety).
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care (nursing notes, charts, reports).
- Maintain accurate unit records (census, reports, incident reports).
- Prepare and submit regular reports such as shift reports, monthly activity reports, incident reports to the Senior Nursing Officer and Director of Nursing Services.
- Facilitate effective communication during shift handovers.
- Act as the primary liaison between the nursing unit and other departments (Doctors, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Radiology, Administration).
- Attend relevant hospital meetings (such as, nursing management, quality assurance, unit meetings).
- Implement hospital policies and directives within the unit.
- Monitor compliance with regulatory standards (Nursing Council of Kenya, Ministry of Health).
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits within the unit.
- Report and investigate clinical incidents, near misses, and adverse events.
- Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols rigorously.
- Uphold patient confidentiality and data protection standards.
- Assist in monitoring unit expenditures against the budget (especially regarding supplies).
- Contribute to cost-containment efforts while maintaining quality care.
