About The Role As a Senior Backend Developer, you will help shape the technology behind hygi.de’s e-commerce platform. PHP and Symfony are your foundation, and you understand how AI tools can support modern software engineering. You will work in a backend team alongside three other developers and collaborate closely with the Shop Team Lead, Product Owners, and other business functions.

This is a hands-on role with influence beyond individual feature delivery. You will contribute to architecture and engineering standards, build complex shop capabilities, and help the team use AI coding tools responsibly and effectively. You will also explore potential AI applications for our online shop, assessing their technical feasibility and business value. The goal is to deliver solutions that are maintainable, reliable, and economically worthwhile.

Qualifications You bring at least five years of professional backend development experience, including strong practical experience with modern PHP and Symfony. You have a sound understanding of software architecture and have worked with approaches such as Domain-Driven Design, modular monoliths, microservices, or event-driven architecture. You are confident with MySQL and understand database performance, caching, and queueing.

You have practical experience using AI coding assistants or agents, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, and can critically assess AI-generated code. You know how to weigh technical elegance against business value and operational cost. You communicate clearly with technical and non-technical colleagues, share knowledge, and approach complex problems thoughtfully. Very good German and good English skills are required.

Responsibilities Develop and evolve our PHP 8.x and Symfony backend, making well-reasoned decisions about scalability, maintainability, performance, and architecture. Design and implement sophisticated e-commerce features across checkout, pricing, assortment, search, and fulfillment. Maintain high standards through clean code, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD practices.

Use AI coding assistants and agents to support development, refactoring, testing, and documentation. Help establish effective AI-supported workflows for the team, while reviewing generated output for quality, security, and suitability. Identify and evaluate AI use cases for the shop, including intelligent search, product data enrichment, recommendations, and process automation.

Translate business goals into technical solutions and consider relevant measures such as conversion, average basket value, margin, and process costs. Act as a technical partner to Product Owners, developers, and other departments, and contribute your expertise to shared decisions and team learning.
