QA Engineer (m/f/d) – Test Automation and Test Infrastructure

About The Company Founded in 1954, Thomann GmbH is the world’s largest mail-order retailer of musical instruments and music equipment and one of Germany’s leading e-commerce companies. Our online shop, thomann.de, serves approximately 15 million customers, from beginners to internationally renowned musicians. With more than 120,000 products, our range includes instruments, sheet music, event and lighting technology, major international brands, and Thomann’s own product lines.

Our Service Center IT develops and operates the applications used across service operations, including warehousing, returns, shipping, and customer support. The six-person development team works directly within the service organization and manages a broad range of responsibilities, from on-site support and feature development to server operations and reporting. We use AI tools in our development process and continuously adapt the way we work.

Our campus in Treppendorf, near Bamberg, is also home to Europe’s largest music store and a specialist service center.

About The Role As our QA Engineer, you will help establish quality assurance across approximately 40 applications. You will build the strategy, infrastructure, environments, and processes that enable the team to test reliably and release with confidence. This is a hands-on role with scope to shape how testing works at Thomann. Writing automated tests is important, but your wider focus will be ensuring that the complete test system is dependable, maintainable, and practical for developers to use.

Qualifications You bring at least three years of experience in test automation, including building and operating test setups. You are confident with at least one programming language, ideally Java or TypeScript, and have experience with UI test frameworks such as Playwright and with API testing.

You understand CI/CD practices and Docker, with GitLab CI experience particularly relevant. Good SQL skills and foundational Linux knowledge are required; familiarity with MS SQL Server, Ansible, or Java application servers is an advantage.

You take a pragmatic approach to quality, favoring reliable, maintainable tests over large test suites that are difficult to support. You are open to using AI tools thoughtfully and can help colleagues develop their testing skills. Professional working proficiency in both German and English, at least B2 level, is required.

Responsibilities Develop a testing strategy for a portfolio of approximately 40 applications, defining the appropriate level and value of testing for each. Select and configure suitable tools, including UI automation with Playwright and API testing for REST backends. Work with the team to build and operate test environments and a production-like staging system. Establish reproducible test data in MS SQL while protecting production data.

Integrate automated tests into the GitLab CI/CD pipeline so that quality checks keep pace with AI-assisted development. Write and maintain automated tests for critical workflows, using manual testing only when appropriate. Promote consistent testing practices by enabling developers to write effective tests, and collaborate closely with the Product Owner during acceptance activities.

Benefits Help build a new quality assurance capability and influence how testing is carried out across the organization. Work with a varied technology landscape spanning Java, Spring, Angular, and established applications. Thomann offers 30 days of annual leave, flexible working hours, and a hybrid model with the option to work from home up to two days per week. Compensation includes performance-related pay, a Christmas bonus, and an occupational pension scheme.

Additional benefits include a welcoming environment with flat hierarchies and team events, a modern workplace away from city congestion, free English and office-skills courses, corporate discounts, and a canteen serving freshly prepared meals. Employees can also use a fully equipped rehearsal room, an on-site gym, health management services, and the JobRad bicycle program. Employee use of EV charging spaces is free.

Equal Opportunity

Thomann GmbH welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to a respectful, inclusive workplace. We value the skills, experience, and perspectives each person brings. If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit your application, including a cover letter, résumé, relevant certificates, and salary expectations.
