Java Support Engineer

Job Overview

Plan A Technologies is looking for a skilled Java Support Engineer to join our team in a Level 3 (L3) Support capacity. This role is ideal for an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex production issues, improving system reliability, and working closely with development, infrastructure, and product teams to maintain mission-critical applications.

As an L3 Support Engineer, you will be responsible for investigating and resolving complex technical issues, performing root cause analysis, implementing permanent fixes, and contributing to the continuous improvement of our applications and operational processes. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong debugging skills, deep knowledge of Java-based enterprise applications, and the ability to work in production environments.

Please note: you must have at least 10+ years of experience with Java to be considered for this role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITY

• Provide L3 production support for enterprise Java applications.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production incidents, performance issues, and application defects.
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement long-term corrective actions.
• Analyze logs, thread dumps, heap dumps, and application metrics to identify issues.
• Develop bug fixes, patches, and enhancements while maintaining high code quality.
• Collaborate with development, QA, DevOps, database administrators, and infrastructure teams to resolve cross-functional issues.
• Participate in incident management, problem management, and post-incident reviews.
• Design and implement monitoring, alerting, and automation to improve operational efficiency.
• Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Review system architecture and recommend improvements to increase resiliency and maintainability.
• Participate in on-call support rotations as required.
• Document troubleshooting procedures, technical solutions, and operational runbooks.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership during incident resolution.

Experience

• 10+ years of professional experience developing and supporting enterprise Java applications.
• Expert knowledge of Java and object-oriented programming principles.
• Extensive experience with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem.
• Strong experience designing, querying, and optimizing relational databases (such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or SQL Server).
• Solid understanding of system design, distributed systems, scalability, resiliency, and high-availability architectures.
• Strong SQL skills and database performance tuning experience.
• Experience troubleshooting production systems in complex enterprise environments.
• Strong debugging skills using logs, profilers, monitoring tools, and JVM diagnostics.
• Experience working with REST APIs and microservices architectures.
• Familiarity with application servers, messaging systems, and integration patterns.
• Experience with Git and modern software development practices.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns, and clean code practices.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple production priorities.
• Initiative and drive to do great things.
