About The Role

As a Staff Engineer at Matera, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's technical vision and ensuring its successful implementation.

Your responsibilities will include defining and evolving the backend architecture, setting coding standards, and spearheading initiatives to enhance the developer experience. You will lead projects that have a significant impact on the product’s quality and velocity, working closely with cross-functional teams to drive technical excellence. Your expertise will influence the entire technical organization, guiding best practices, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with leadership to align technical strategies with business objectives.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a modern tech stack, including Ruby on Rails, Kubernetes, Terraform, React, and AI tools, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional experience as a Software Engineer with a strong focus on backend development
• Expertise in Ruby on Rails and related backend technologies
• Proficiency with DevOps practices and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes and Terraform
• Full-stack inclination with experience managing end-to-end projects
• Proven leadership skills capable of defining a technical vision and motivating teams
• Deep understanding of application performance, database optimization, and infrastructure management
• Strong experience integrating AI methodologies into development workflows
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
• Experience working in fast-growing products and connected systems involving large language models (LLMs) is a plus
• Previous experience as a Staff or Principal Engineer is advantageous
• Familiarity with React and frontend technologies is a bonus

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve the long-term backend architecture, including modularization, design systems, and performance optimization
• Identify current technical limitations, propose solutions, and lead their implementation with the team
• Initiate and lead high-impact technical or product initiatives
• Establish and promote backend coding standards across all squads
• Enhance the developer experience through tooling, CI/CD, testing strategies, and documentation
• Mentor engineers at all levels, fostering collective growth and technical excellence
• Contribute to the overall technical vision alongside the CTO and other senior leaders
• Collaborate with autonomous squads to ensure seamless delivery and maintenance of features
• Integrate AI-driven development practices, leveraging tools like Cursor and orchestrators
