Difference Between DFA and NFA

The Difference Between DFA and NFA is mainly based on how they handle transitions. DFA (Deterministic Finite Automaton) follows exactly one transition for each input, while NFA (Nondeterministic Finite Automaton) can have multiple possible transitions.

Both DFA and NFA are used in Theory of automata to recognize regular languages.

DFA and NFA in Simple Words

A DFA makes only one possible choice at each step. For a particular state and input symbol, it moves to exactly one next state.

An NFA can have more than one choice. For the same state and input symbol, it may move to different possible states.

Example

If the machine is in state q0 and receives input a:

DFA:
q0 → q1

NFA:
q0 → q1 or q2

This is the basic Difference Between DFA and NFA.

Similarities Between DFA and NFA

  • Both are finite automata.

  • Both recognize regular languages.

  • Both contain states, transitions, an initial state, and final states.

  • Both are used in Theory of Computation.

  • Every NFA can be converted into an equivalent DFA.

Conclusion

The main Difference Between DFA and NFA is their transition behavior. A DFA has exactly one possible transition for each input, whereas an NFA can have multiple possible transitions. However, both DFA and NFA have the same computational power and recognize regular languages.
