About the Role

We're looking for experienced Python Software Engineers to join a highly technical engineering team, developing sophisticated backend applications and distributed systems. This is a software engineering-focused position involving the design, development and optimisation of scalable, high-performance applications operating within complex, data-intensive environments. You'll work on a combination of greenfield development and existing systems, solving challenging engineering problems involving scalability, performance, reliability and system architecture.

The role offers significant technical ownership and the opportunity to contribute to systems that play an important part in the firm's operations.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain robust, production-grade Python applications.
• Build scalable backend services, microservices and distributed systems.
• Develop sophisticated software solutions capable of processing large volumes of complex financial information.
• Contribute to greenfield development projects, designing and implementing new applications and services.
• Optimise existing systems for performance, scalability, reliability and efficiency.
• Solve complex engineering challenges involving system architecture, concurrency and application performance.
• Collaborate with experienced software engineers and financial specialists to deliver sophisticated technical solutions.
• Participate in architectural discussions, code reviews and technical decision-making.
• Contribute to engineering best practices and the ongoing improvement of development processes.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong commercial Python experience, particularly within backend or systems development.
• Experience within investment banking, hedge funds, asset management, fintech or similarly demanding technical environments.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, algorithms, data structures and object-oriented programming.
• Proven experience designing, developing and maintaining production-grade software applications.
• Experience working with distributed systems, microservices or scalable backend architectures.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
• Strong academic background in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a related discipline.

Required Skills

• Strong commercial Python experience, particularly within backend or systems development.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, algorithms, data structures and object-oriented programming.
• Experience working with distributed systems, microservices or scalable backend architectures.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to tackle complex technical challenges.
• Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases.
• Experience optimising performance-critical applications.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with distributed computing, concurrency or multithreaded applications.
• Knowledge of event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka.
• Experience designing APIs and developing service-oriented architectures.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes and modern deployment environments.
• Exposure to financial markets, trading systems, risk management or quantitative environments.

Pay range and compensation package

• Compensation: Up to £200,000 Total Compensation (Base Salary + Discretionary Bonus).
