Scala / Java Software Engineer - Investment Banking - Glasgow- 12 Months Contract - Hybrid - 3 Days in the Office

We are seeking an experienced Scala / Java Software Engineer to join a leading global investment bank in Glasgow on an initial 12 months contract.

You will join a global technology team supporting Equity Swaps Trading, working on business-critical Regulatory Reporting systems within a complex capital markets environment.

Scala experience is strongly preferred, as the majority of the existing codebase is written in Scala. However, the hiring manager is also keen to consider exceptionally strong Java Developers who are interested in learning Scala. Developers with a solid Java foundation have successfully transitioned into the Scala environment, so this could be an excellent opportunity to develop your Scala expertise.

The Role:

Working within an Agile development team, you will be responsible for developing, enhancing and supporting regulatory reporting applications that support global compliance requirements.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Developing and enhancing intra-day and end-of-day regulatory reporting systems.
• Working on Scala-based processing engines within a complex enterprise environment.
• Writing high-quality, maintainable code and comprehensive unit tests.
• Investigating and resolving application issues, including production support.
• Working closely with business users and technical stakeholders to understand complex requirements.
• Supporting UAT, release sign-off, deployment activities and post-release support.
• Taking ownership of technical problems and delivering key features to meet regulatory obligations.
• Following best practices around software engineering, code quality and Agile delivery.
• Using AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and accelerate the software development lifecycle.

Key Skills & Experience:

• Strong commercial experience with Scala or Java in an enterprise environment.
• Scala experience is preferred, but outstanding Java Developers willing to learn Scala will also be considered.
• Experience with message/event-driven architectures such as Kafka or MQ.
• Experience working within Unix/Linux environments.
• Relational database skills.
• Good analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Experience developing and supporting complex, data-intensive applications.
• Understanding of Agile software development practices.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and business stakeholders.

Desirable Experience:

• Previous experience within investment banking or capital markets.
• Knowledge of equity derivatives, particularly Equity Swaps.
• Understanding of global regulatory reporting requirements.
• Experience with Python, Perl or Unix scripting.
• Database performance tuning.
• Experience actively using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude and other AI coding assistants.
