Senior Java Software Engineer
Job description
About the role:
Our client is a well-established software company expanding its development team, and is looking for a Java Developer to join them. Their products are used by public-sector and regulated organisations, so your work has a real impact on the people who rely on it.
You'll bring technical strength and a fresh perspective, help improve ways of working and support the growth of colleagues, with no line-management responsibility. While strong Java is essential, the day-to-day work is likely to be more SQL and database focused.
What you'll be doing:
- Learning the ACOS product and codebase, then taking ownership of customer-focused projects
- Investigating, debugging and enhancing existing functionality
- Building new features across Java, SQL and database development
- Working through a varied backlog of new functionality, bug fixes and maintenance
- Taking part in Scrum ceremonies (stand-ups, refinement, sprint planning)
- Suggesting improvements to processes and technical approaches
- Supporting and mentoring colleagues where appropriate
What we're looking for Essential:
- Strong core Java experience, particularly legacy Java 8 / JDK 8 applications
- Strong SQL and database experience, including complex queries and database design
- Experience with relational databases such as MS SQL / T-SQL, MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Experience working in an Agile Scrum environment
- Comfortable maintaining and enhancing an established, complex application
Nice to have:
- Oracle and/or PL/SQL
- XML
- JBoss, WebLogic, Jenkins or Spring
- Broader web application experience
- Experience mentoring other developers
What you'll get:
- Hybrid working, 35-hour week
- 30 days' annual leave plus public holidays
- Pension, life assurance and volunteering opportunities
- Optional health and dental insurance
- Income protection and company sick pay after probation
- The chance to influence technical direction and help the team grow Interview process Two stages: a 30-minute remote interview, then a one-hour in-person discussion with a scenario exercise. No coding test or preparation needed.
Start date: ideally before the end of the year, though January is workable. Notice periods of up to three months considered.
