From my experience of working in mental health for the past three years within the exercise therapy team I have come to understand so much about the impact exercise can have on mental health. It is used as an important tool for de-escalation and target times through talk first data, it shown to have a bigger impact then some anti-depressant medication, you are able to physically see how patients improve after spending time off the ward, you have meaningful interaction and are able to support a very clinically vulnerable population in there most challenging times and from being within both a band 3 role as an exercise therapy assistant and a band 5 role as an exercise therapist I have alot of experience in how to support this specific population along with a good understanding of working in mental health and how this differs from regular PT sessions/exercise. This has given me experience working across a variety of wards such as male/female acute and rehabilitation wards across various sites within CNTW including hopewood park, st Georges, CAV and rose lodge and how these different populations requires different types of exercise therapy input and how exercise can vary on a multiple factors such as age, physical health, patients enjoyment/interests thus giving me experience in adapting exercise to suit the variety of populations such as ward based stretching sessions, seated boxing, more cognitive work through sensory circuits, basket ball, community gym session etc.
I have a degree in nutrition, exercise and health and have completed both Level 3 GP referral and Level 4 in diabetes and weight management which are required for the role, in bases accredited with an application in place for certified exercise practitioner. I have a big love for exercise and fitness myself this role helps me to help other people which is the most important part and do what I enjoy.
