I'm currently working in retail as a sales assistant for Lidl and have previously worked for JD Sports and also undertaken an apprenticeship within my local butchers. In all of these roles I have gained many new transferable skills which I feel I could apply in this new role. I have been placed in positions of responsibility both in my previous job roles by overseeing the day-to-day running's of a small business and also in my current job role, with senior members of staff entrusting me on occasions to take charge during my shift.
I have gained loads of experience working with the public. I am a good listener and can adapt quickly to new environments and work arrangements. I work well under pressure both individually and as a member of a team.
Within these high-pressure environments, I have learned that it is essential to have good communication skills and be a good listener in order to follow instructions, all of which are skills I exhibit.
Apprentice at Murray Quality Foods & West Coast Butchers (2020-08 – 2022-10)
As an apprentice some of the more experienced butchers took me under their wing and taught me things like using the equipment and machines safely. They also showed me how to organise the stock in the fridges/freezers. During my time working in both shops, my job role was the "apprentice" but I was given many more responsibilities exceeding my role such as being responsible for opening/closing the shops, running the shops by myself for the day on multiple occasions.
I had to also order stock, handle money from the public as well as suppliers. I also had to ensure the hygiene was up to standard. During my time at the butchers, I worked with people from a variety of different age ranges.
While working myself I had to use my initiative and learn how to do things like boning lamb and beef by myself.
Sales Assistant at JD Sports (2022-11 – 2024-11)
I was a sales assistant working in delivery. My job was to bring in the stock and process it by booking it in and unpacking. I had to make sure that the items where bugged, using the correct bug in the correct place before placing them on hangers, ensuring the correct size cube and price had been added on for the public before they made it on to the shop floor.
As I progressed in the role, management had trusted me to set up my section and organise how it was running that day. As delivery could get intense, I had to learn to work well in our team in order to make the process more efficient and complete to the highest standard. As well as completing my own tasks, I was also entrusted to help train up any new staff members.
Sales Assistant at Lidl UK (2024-11 – Present)
In my current position I have many different tasks to complete, however in Lidl I am the 'Fruit and Veg specialist'. What this means is that in the morning (between 6am-8am) I have to make sure that I have all the Fruit and Veg delivery put on the shelves in the correct space, blocked off in sections, have it organised from cheapest to most expensive and also ensure that it meets the quality check. This ensures that all produce on the shop floor is safe for consumption.
I also have to tidy and clean my section of the store before the store officially opens at 8am. Throughout my shift I complete a variety of different tasks, such as, organising the freezers in the warehouse, stock rotation, keeping the bakery topped up and clean, working the tills and self-checkouts, and assisting customers on the shop floor.
