Whole-time Firefighter - Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Services, Watford Fire Station - Watford
(2023-04)
In April 2023 I was offered the chance to fulfill a lifelong ambition of mine and become a whole-time firefighter. The training was 16 weeks long, which was grueling both physically and mentally, with a lot of study time in the evenings. I then had to continue with another 18 months of continuous studying, as well as physical and theoretical observations to become a competent firefighter.
As a firefighter, I developed a strong foundation in safety-critical operations, situational awareness, and working under pressure. These are all skills which I believe will be transferrable into the rail industry. My responsibilities require quick thinking, disciplined decision making, and the ability to follow complex procedures with absolute precision.
I regularly operate within a team structure while also taking initiative when working independently. Other transferrable skills I believe I have attained from my time as a firefighter are the fact I am able to remain calm and effective in high stress situations. I have strong communication skills both within a team and when conveying important information clearly and accurately.
I am also very mentally and physically resilient, which has develope
Self-employed (Macks Performance) - Rock Health and Fitness - Great Offley, Hitchin
(2020-07)
I was offered the opportunity to run some outdoor fitness classes by an old friend just after lockdown while I was still at MacDonald Humfrey. Things really started to take traction, and I ended up building a small client base, which lead me to fall back in love with training people and being back in the fitness industry, which is my true passion. I have since been working and running my own self-employed business 'Macks Performance' since January 2021.
I have now managed to keep this job going as well as being a wholetime firefighter.
Electrical Installation Technician - MacDonald Humfrey Automation (L3 Harris/Leidos) - Luton
(2018-12 - 2020-12)
I joined MacDonald Humfrey after unfortunately being made redundant from P O'Neill's Electrical to finish my Electrical Level 3 installation qualification. This gave me an opportunity to go back to the automation industry, where I started with ATG. I first started in the Panel Shop where I would build and wire various size control panels and junction boxes from scratch following specific lay out and schematic drawings.
I have also been lucky enough to work at huge car plants all over the country and in Wales, where I spent over a year working away. I've also worked in various other car factories such as Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin, Toyota, Bentley etc. The work varies from installation the control panels built in the shop to making off SY glands into a 3-phase motor to fitting trucking, tray or conduit containment.
I have also worked on a lot of conveyor systems which mainly consist of motors, limit switches, e-stops, which I will wire and terminate. This job has also given me a lot of exposure to working with SWA cable of various sizes where I would gland off into mainly commando sockets and isolators. I have also attended a course in PLC engineering and Robot Programming howe
Adult Trainee Electrician - P O'Neills Electrical - Luton
(2016-02 - 2018-12)
I was offered the opportunity to progress my electrical career by being offered the chance to go to college as an adult trainee to become a qualified electrician. I ended up doing a lot of industrial work back at Vauxhall IBC mainly consisting of SWA and containment, however I was exposed to a lot of data cables, which involved making them off and testing after. I also worked at a block of flats on Kensington High Street where I had exposure to the domestic side of electrics.
This involved a lot of lighting and ring circuits where I would first and second fix these specific circuits. Unfortunately the company went into liquidation and I was made redundant.
Trainee Wireman - Automated Technology Group - Silsoe
(2015-05 - 2016-02)
The Automated Technology Group is a company which specifies in Automation. During my time there I was a Trainee Wireman. I would assist wiring small builds and higher voltage control panels, however it wasn't long before I was wiring and testing control panels unsupervised.
I also helped wire the new building the company brought in Northampton which I really enjoyed. I was always willing to go and fit or help modify site installations. This meant early mornings travelling to Birmingham, Crewe, Castle Bromwich etc, but I loved it.
I always made sure a job was never half complete and finished too the best of my abilities. I felt I had to leave as I didn't receive the training I would have liked to progress with the company as a Wireman.
Floodlighting Technician - Highlights Flooding LTD
(2014-06 - 2014-04)
Highlights are a floodlighting company that maintain and build floodlights. We would often supply ground works so the armoured cables could be layered before we erected the new floodlights. I would often be sent too jobs too just wire new bulbs.
It was early starts with long hours but I loved every minute of the job as it was always challenging. I was promised I would be sent to college to get my Level 3 in electrical installation; however, it never came to fruition and unfortunately due to the demand of work being so low the business had to make cuts which sore a number of the newest members lose our jobs.
Personal Trainer - Double Vision Conditioning Centre
(2013-01 - 2014-04)
The reason I left Active Luton was due to a huge opportunity at receiving my Level 3 Personal Training course and working in my first PT role. I took it with both hands and learnt so much from the experience. I would be the first person in the gym, opening up at 05:30am and closing at 21:00pm.
I would run all sorts of session including groups of up to 20 and one-to-ones. I really enjoyed the way I was helping people's lives for the better, however I wasn't given enough room to progress or any independence in the role, which made me fall out of love with it, which lead me to decide I needed a change and preferably a trade.
Apprentice - Active Luton
(2009-09 - 2012-12)
I secured an apprenticeship straight after I left school in a leisure centre with Active Luton. This was very tough to secure due to the number of applicants and interviewees they considered for only a small number of apprentices, however through my hard work and determination I was able to secure one of this. During this time I achieved National Lifeguard qualification with the company and also achieved a NVQ Level 2 in Sport and Leisure and Gym instructor Level 2.
This was a great start too my career and a job I truly loved.
