Healthcare Worker - Welsh Ambulance Service - Wales

My role involves supporting vulnerable patients including those who are frail, elderly, disabled, receiving cancer treatment down Velindre, attending regular dialysis or requiring specialised transport due to their medical condition. On many occasions I have supported patients through a variety of stages of cancer treatment whether it be from initial tests and diagnosis right up to end-of-life care helping to facilitate care from hospital to their own homes or hospice care. This requires a high level of compassion, dignity, sensitivity and professionalism, not only for patients but also for their families and loved ones.

Since beginning my career with the Health Board as a Healthcare worker, I have developed a strong interest in working within fast paced clinical environment and performing effectively under pressure. I have worked in Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) for 3 years alongside banking during the global pandemic. While this period was challenging, it provided me with invaluable experience and helped me to build confidence while developing both my professional knowledge and practical skills.
A key part of my responsibilities is ensuring that patient hygiene and personal care needs are met while maintaining their dignity, privacy, and respect at all times. I regularly undertake patient observations, including blood pressure, temperature, respirations and oxygen saturation levels, ensuring these are recorded accurately using the All Wales NEWS chart. If a patient's NEWS score is elevated, I escalate this promptly to the qualified nurse and nurse in charge so that appropriate action can be taken.
