Owner, Floor Fitter at Complete Flooring Solutions (1999-07 – 2007-04)
This business was set up by myself and my partner. Due to my position within the company my time was divided between liaising with customer, dealing with others within the industry, monitoring the company finances, supervising members of staff and fitting carpet. I also gained extensive knowledge in first fix carpentry.
Setting up my own business proved to be a real challenge that I enjoyed greatly. My main responsibilities included striking up new business, and maintaining existing business. Complete flooring solutions proved to be very successful and I believe this is partly due to my ability to communicate with people in every aspect of business albeit employees, clients, or others within the industry.
In December 2005 after careful consideration we decided to close the business due to personal reasons.
Carpet Fitter at Regency Carpets (1996-06 – 1999-07)
I went into the family business after leaving Harold Bloom Signs. It was something that I had been interested in for years and also enabled me to carry on working with customers and with my hands. I learnt the trade through my father; this meant running general errands for him, helping prepare rooms for fitting and generally assisting.
Once I had learnt the trade I became a fitter myself and my main responsibilities included liaising with customers, and fitting carpet. In 1998 my father and his his business partner closed Regency Carpets. It was at this point I decided that I would take the knowledge that I had gained and open my own business with a fellow employee.
Sign Fitter at Harold Bloom Signs (1991-08 – 1996-06)
I started working here straight after I completed my GCSE's. The business specialised in sign fittings, this included fitting shop fascias, neon signs and a number of others. Due to the nature of this work it also gave me ground knowledge of electrics. This proved to be a good basis for my communication skills as it meant liaising with customers and dealing with general members of the public. I left this company in 1996 when they ceased trading.
