Data scientist | Postdoctoral Research Associate - University of York - UK
(2023-01)
I was hired as a postdoctoral research associate to conduct research data analysis on Virology data in partnership with the University of Leeds' Stockley Lab.
- analysed large-scale high-dimensional viral genomic datasets to identify patterns, variants and quality metrics and built reproducible data-processing pipelines using Python to clean, transform and interpret sequencing data
- developed and maintained bioinformatics workflows for genome assembly and quality control and applied statistical methods to assess mutation and genome completeness
- Communicated with biologists to deliver actionable genomic insights through visualisations and concise reports and ensured robust documentation, reproducibility, and version control across all analysis workflows
Scientific staff | PhD student - FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg - Germany
(2018-01 - 2021-12)
Chair of Data Management (CS6). The technical and research achievements I obtained here are
- designed and developed a new query optimiser named COPRAO for a near data processing architecture based on a large-scale related database system called Apache Calcite, improving query performance by 64% or more based on the FGPA hardware attached to it
- implemented ETL/ELT workflows using Python, and SQL and used monitoring and profiling tools such as pg_stat_statements and EXPLAIN/ANALYZE
- conducted benchmark testing (e.g.TPC-H/TPC-DS) to validate the performance improvement on distributed systems and applied statistical methods and data-driven optimization techniques for system performance evaluation
- implemented data-partitioning and caching strategies that reduced latency for high-throughput applications and designed scalable schemas for real-time system
- worked with cross-functional teams (software and hardware engineers) to translate system bottlenecks into actionable optimization solutions
- mentored junior researchers on projects using Big-data ecosystems such as Spark, Hadoop and Hive
Research Assistant - Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management - Trivandrum, India
(2014-01 - 2015-12)
I worked on a project called MICRONet, which was funded by ITRA, Media Lab Asia, and the Government of India. The aim of this project was to create dependable communication devices for fishermen sailing to deep sea for fishing.
- data collection and analysis to understand the communication gaps, safety risks and environmental challenges faced by fishermen, enabling data-driven design of the prototype device
- processed large datasets (GPS, weather patterns, signal coverage, behavioural data) to identify pattern critical for device functionality and network reliability
- used Python, SQL for statistical analysis to model communication range, failure points and optimal data transmission routes in low-connectivity environments
- built reports to communicate insights to cross-functional teams and project stakeholders, supporting the prototyping
