Having worked in the hotel sector, public sector and events sector this has provided an extensive knowledge of people from a range of different societies and backgrounds. Dedication to the local community with both the younger generation working in a school and experience volunteering with the elderly residents in a care home; teaching them how to set up emails and basic I.T skills has provided skills in being clear and concise while trying to avoid confusion. Within the hotel sector at a 4* hotel there was a constant need to provide excellent customer service provisions in order to maintain a 4* rating standard.
Having had subject specialism in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and through a degree in Biomedical Science this has provided an in-depth knowledge and understanding of certain Science specialisms. This has led to becoming a knowledgeable Senior Science technician with more than 10 years' experience in schools.
Daily this involves the selection and preparation of material for science classes. Since being at the school there has been a launch to set up I.T based systems to make the labs more efficient. This involved setting up Lab Logger for the school and helping within the school library during the Summer.
Working alongside a librarian with library specific qualification allowed me to learn professional standards in library cataloguing. Cataloguing is also a requirement in labs in terms of chemicals and equipment lists where we have online systems to catalogue items.
Hotel experience in a 4* and 5* hotel
Presentation skills are paramount within a hotel setting. Excellent written, verbal and physical presentation styles are needed at different times within a hotel setting. There is also a need to be flexible with working hours since the hotel in open every day throughout the year.
This means there are various projects that need to be set up for e.g., charity fundraisers, weddings, professional business banking meetings and general day to day events. This allowed helped when arranging a friend's wedding which was a big project and required a lot of attention to detail.
Saturday School Science Teacher - Saturday School
Working as a Science Teacher with the autonomy to choose your own teaching style allowed innovation in teaching and allowed research into the best methods to each child under the care of the Saturday School. Being provided with the right level of support allowed lower ability student expelled from mainstream schools to flourish while also catering for high achievers. Effective negotiation skills allowed parents to influence management to increase staff pay and split classes to provide better access to education via smaller classes by the centre.
In order to provide training for volunteers the Science staff had to train them to provide support in the lessons. There were a lot of cross curricular activity where many of the English Teachers were published authors, so they were regularly recommending various reading lists and setting up book launch days.
Biomedical Scientist placement year - Darenth Valley Hospital
Working within a hospital requires strong communication and interpersonal skills. Within the hospital there was a requirement to sort specimens and use computerised systems to log samples. Before the start of work a lot of planning, organisation and prioritising had to take place before test were carried out on various samples.
There were always opportunities to generate new ideas and suggestions for change or improvement e.g., when staff suggested that the hospital should have a P.C.R machine onsite. This suggestion was listened to, and a machine was bought, and staff were trained.
