Lanfine is a large textile company in East Ayrshire. We supply retail suppliers such as Next, Laura Ashley, John Lewis & The White Company with bedding, curtains & soft furnishings. We also have two in-house brands, The Honesty Works & Cotton Anthology.
I receive CAD's from the suppliers or our own in-house designers and I re-colour, re-size and set them up, to be made into their finished product. I use a mixture of Photoshop and AVA CAD software to set these files into correctly repeating CAD's. I usually receive a paper art-work from the client to which they want their product matched to, or they will send me a colour palette of Pantones to be matched.
These colours are often outwith our printers colour gamut, so there will be a back and forth with the client being sent colour strike-offs, until a happy medium is reached. Once they have signed off the colour, production will begin. I will label and keep a master copy of all colour sign-offs in our masters cabinet for reference against all future bulk productions.
Colour tweeks will be made if there is a significant colour shift. I also use, within our AVA software a programme called Productivity Manager. Using our i1Pro, colour can be scanned in & checked against a master file.
The programme flags any colour out with a DeltaE value of 2. Every month, each fabric we print on is profiled for colour. I print colour profiling grids, which are then read using an Xrite i0Table via AVA's Printer Cal app.
This keeps colour as consistent as possible. It accounts for any slight shift in the colour of the base fabric or any colour shifts that have occured in the printer itself. I am also solely responsible for the loading, running & maintaining/cleaning our two textile printers (Arachne Hexa & Artrix G5 supplied to us by DGen).
These are large format roll to roll printers and run on water based inks. We usually run 120m rolls, of 32 pick half panama. The Artrix will print 200m per day, the Arachne around 100. The Artrix has a 'sticky' belt & the Arachne is tensioning.
After each roll is finished, they are transferred to our Transmatic Heat Press for drying to cure the ink. I will then re-roll the material to check for flaws, drop-out, banding or any other issues that may have been missed during production, before it is passed through to our factory floor. Along with these duties, I also order inks and materials for the printroom, answer any emails that come through from the office or clients.
I liase with AVA and DGen on any issues that arise with the printers that I cannot fix myself. I attend departmental meetings and decide on the weekly print schedule for bulk production and sampling.

In my role as Digital Print Operator, I am responsible for the loading, running & maintaining our large format digital printers (EFI VUTEk GS3250LX Pro) and its accompanying Fiery rip software. We use UV inks to print on various latex, papers, vinyl's, acrylics, Foamex, Digibond & Ecofilms etc for large corporate brands. A high attention to detail is always necessary to ensure exact & consistent colour matching & checking for banding / drop-out etc on the prints, creating master copies when necessary, whilst observing the correct procedures to limit mistakes & minimize down-time for maintenance.
A lot of time is also spent on cleaning & maintaining the printers, for maximum print quality. Paying careful attention to the correct reading of job sheets, for the correct work flow, amounts, size & colour spec info is also extremely important here, a simple mistake or having to re-run jobs is costly in time & money! We are always working to tight deadlines & allowing for jobs that often come in at the last minute, so prioritizing work loads is an integral part of the day.

At OPG, I have learned all aspects of producing digital prints for the vinyl wrapping of car/fleet vehicles. I load & operate large format printers & their software (HP Scitex LX850, HP LX2610 Latex Scitex, HP Latex 570). Fully proficient in Thrive & Onyx RIP software etc Colour matching & attention to detail is extremely important.
As well as maintaining the printers, I am responsible for all material ordering, liaising with clients, attending departmental meetings daily & making sure the dept. is run smoothly. In the production area, I use finishing / cutting/plotting Zund tables for laser cutting of wrapping graphics. I mask the Zund cut graphics in preparation for application to the vehicles.
I am a certified first aider & fully versed in all aspects of health & saefty.

As part of my role as Archive Conservator, I took both weekly & monthly environmental monitoring reports of all rooms within the building concerned with storage of delicate material. Id download & catalogue the data onto a spread sheet & take averages via the graphs readings given. I learned washing & de-acidifying techniques with sodium bi-carbonate & carried out the procedures on paper documents within our storage rooms.
I took records of any insects found & layed out new traps. Myself & my supervisor Richard, would clean & de-acidify maps of surrounding areas, kept in our storage rooms. Starting with cleaning them using plastic erasers, smoke sponges etc, they would be Ph tested & checked for fugitive inks.
Any extensive staining would be removed or reduced as best possible using Acetone applied with cotton buds, over an extraction table. Similarly cellotape or any historical repairs. The necessary areas would be isolated using Cyclododecane, wetted & transferred to an acid etched map wall, where they would be hung (via wetting etc) where any lacunas or mechanical damage would be repaired wheat starch paste & acid-free repair tissue or tonosawa paper, cut using alcohol pens, to

Starting here as a trainee, I have learned pretty much all aspects of fine & commercial bookbinding. I am completely proficient in over-sewing, V-sewing, Singer sewing & hand sewing. I am particularly skilled in box making, whether it be drop-backed boxes, tray boxes, slip covers or bespoke.
Our company holds a long-term & on-going contract with The British Library, for both journal binding & archival box-making for their various departments. We also hold contracts with the Advocates, Judges & London Libraries, where I have regularly done both complete re-binds, re-backs, paper repairs, spine repairs etc. We also in among all this do thesis binding, soft binding, bespoke art-student binds.
I am skilled in Photoshop & Illustrator, Microsoft Word & Office, Power Point & although to a lesser extent, Excel. Time management & meeting deadlines is constantly a priority, we have to be aware of our own daily work that has to be completed as well as the larger contracts we hold. Its necessary to help colleagues with certain stages of work as we all hold our own specific areas of expertise, which also has to be factored into our own timelines.

This was my first 'proper' job after graduating. I learned how to typeset correctly from individual customer orders & the companys standing contracts. It was pretty much art-working letter heads, company logos & stamps, but I learned how to use the pc package Coral and Photoshop. I also proof-read as-and-when required.
