A Healthcare Assistant (HCA) plays a vital support role in the delivery of healthcare services. Their main duties revolve around helping patients with daily activities and assisting medical professionals, especially nurses, in clinical and care settings.
Helping patients with washing, dressing, and toileting.
Assisting with mobility (e.g. helping patients move around or use walking aids).
Supporting with eating and drinking.
Taking vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure.
Reporting changes in a patient’s condition to nursing or medical staff.
Keeping accurate patient records.
Offering companionship and conversation.
Providing comfort and reassurance to patients.
Supporting patients with dementia or mental health issues.
Making beds and keeping patient areas clean.
Restocking supplies and preparing equipment.
Assisting in setting up for medical procedures.
Relaying information between patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
Participating in team meetings and handovers.
