John Sharkey

A lifelong technology enthusiast with experience in delivering and maintaining enterprise software. I’m most comfortable learning while getting my hands dirty, never afraid to pick up tasks in new areas. I am a determined problem solver and confident communicator with years of customer service experience with an ability to explain complex concepts to stakeholders. In my spare time I'm an avid cook, festival volunteer and pub quiz pro.

STS Payments – Software Engineer. October 2021 – June 2023.

Java and JavaScript orientated, central role in maintaining entire product stack from user facing front end to payment service backend. Roles and responsibilities:

• Core role in the development of applications for java-based Android payment terminals with an emphasis on test driven development.
• Creation of a Java based simulator for payment terminals for use in integration tests.
• Responsible for development of new components and bugfixes for web UI using

React, Typescript and Redux.

• Oversaw the implementation of SSO across company product family. A complex task that required coordination amongst multiple stakeholders.
• Adhering to an Agile/Scrum methodology. Active participation in fortnightly sprint retroactive and planning meetings, identifying issues and creating stories.
• Routinely lead daily sprint meetings.
• Regularly undertook frontline technical support role, investigating and resolving customer issues. Supporting customers by reconfiguring existing software deployments or making code changes for future releases for bugs found in live environments.

Home Office – Junior Apprentice Developer. July 2019 – July 2020.

Placement year working to support the Cyber Security Operations Centre within the Digital,

Data and Technology department. Roles and responsibilities:

• Maintained security software stack, conducting updates, whitelist management and investigating errors.
• Monitoring of alarms to differentiate false positives from true.
• Development and maintenance of automated systems of reporting.
• Training in the use of AWS for instance maintenance, firewall management and logging.
• Constructing parsers for log ingestion.
• Working and learning under senior developers.
• Hold relevant clearance.
