I am an enthusiastic, organised and driven person, looking to expand on current experiences and learn new skills whilst working as part of a dynamic team. I am personable and thrive on being able to build confidence through new opportunities. I have a keen interest in small animal surgery both orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
I believe I can be a good all-rounder and can apply my skills to whatever job I put my mind to. I will always fully immerse myself in my career while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
Veterinary Surgeon - Bridge Veterinary Centre
(2020-09 - 2022-12)
I was a part of the team at Bridge for 2 years and I was able to expand my skills in both veterinary medicine and surgery. I completed the IVC graduate scheme with them. I developed a keen interest in surgery and carried out surgeries such as rhinoplasties, digit amputations, cystotomies, exploratory laparotomies and also routine surgeries such as spays and neuters. This job allowed me to become a competent first opinion veterinary surgeon.
Rotating Intern to First Opinion Vet - Vale Vets and Referrals
(2022-12)
I completed a one year rotating internship, this included rotating in the following services – mainly medicine and surgery (soft tissue and orthopaedics), with additional opportunities to spend time with cardiology, ophthalmology and dermatology. Additionally, I would work on call covering all services with inpatients in the hospital and occasionally covering the first opinion on call and hospital/ops shifts. Showing my ability to be able to dynamically adapt to whatever situation I am needed.
During my time I wrote a case report that I hope to get published in Vet Record Case Reports and took part in case discussions and clinical clubs with the clinicians. I have since stayed on to become a permanent first opinion vet, preparing to start a small animal surgical certificate in September by actively gaining experience throughout my daily role.
Locum Work - Various Practices
(2022-12)
I carry out locum work alongside my permanent job to be able to gain a range of experience and knowledge from different types of practices across the country. It allows me to understand the diversity across the veterinary profession and further appreciate the work that we do as professionals as well as the connecting with the people who make it what it is.
Clinical Placement - Bridge Veterinary Centre A small animal first opinion practice with an experienced orthopaedic surgeon. I visited this practice for many years for placement and gained many skills. I became competent in small animal vaccination, worming and flea treatments, and therefore administering oral, subcutaneous and topical medicines in these animals, and general health checking.
Clinical Placement - Usk Veterinary Centre
I carried out many of my clinical placement weeks at this busy mixed practice, although I tended to spend most of my time with the farm vets. Here I learnt skills such as pregnancy diagnosis of cattle through manual palpation, castration, dehorning and basic safe animal handling. I also learnt the important of being able to work as a multi-disciplinary team and learnt to appreciate how all the different roles in at a mixed practice make for an efficient team.
Out of Hours Veterinary Assistant - Grange Veterinary Centre
(2019-04 - 2020-07)
Out of hours job at a local small animal veterinary hospital, where my duties included telephone triage and care of inpatients overnight. It allowed me to build my confidence in dealing with clients, sometimes in high stress situations and called upon my decision-making skills. It also allowed me to practice relaying important information to the on-call vet during morning hand over and over the telephone.
It allowed me to become competent in the administration of medications and fluid therapy in sick animals.
Kennel Assistant - Boarding Kennels
(2016 - 2016)
Busy boarding kennels with hydrotherapy and physiotherapy unit. Working as a kennel assistant. Provided holiday cover for one member of staff and worked on reception at times, answering phone calls and making appointments, during busy periods.
