My subjects and qualifications have set me up with vital skills that will help me and be a huge benefit to me for studying veterinary nursing. Biology has given me a great understanding of how animals function and what they need to stay healthy. Practical experiments such as looking at animals' hearts and lungs have given me an understanding of how they function, which has further developed my knowledge.
These experiences have also showed me skills such as teamwork which also strengthened my ability to follow instructions carefully. All the skills i have gained whilst studying biology have helped me develop problem solving skills which allow me to solve issues in high pressure situations.
English has also helped me prepare for this course as it has made me develop skills which are important for this course as I'll have to communicate with owners to discuss any necessary information regarding their pet but I will also need good communication skills so l can communicate with my team. It has also helped me gain confidence and teamwork skills through class discussions and presentations and allowed me to work under timed conditions and meet deadlines. I served as an MVP mentor which helped me develop my communication skills with my younger peers and allowed me to educate them on a variety of issues that were difficult topics such as violence and knife crimes which is a helpful skill because a key part of being a vet nurse is having to have difficult conversations with owners and remaining calm.
When doing MVP I worked with a variety of different people which has helped me adapt to working in different environments which links into veterinary nursing as I will have to work with people who I have never worked with before whilst being in an unfamiliar environment.

Voluntary Work Experience - Lomond Hills Veterinary Practice - Leslie
(2024-10 - 2025-04)
Through Lomond Hills Veterinary practice, I got to observe consultations where I got a deeper understanding of what is included and the way they deliver the information, which also deepened my knowledge and understanding of a variety of small animals. I also got to observe and witness the process of a dog being euthanised and how it works. Through this I gained emotional insight and the importance of decision-making to ensure the right decision is made for the animal.
The reason for this euthanasia was because the dog had lost all function and movement in its back legs, which meant it was struggling, and the owners made the decision for the dog's benefit. I also got to observe the process of emptying anal glands in a consultation on all different types of dogs. This taught me what it was like for the animals as some of the dogs reacted aggressively during this, which allowed me to see how the nurses reacted and how they minimised risk for themselves and for the animal to ensure the dog was comfortable.
It also taught me that some dogs need it more often than normal as they do not clear up as easily. I also got to watch a consultation where the dogs came in for the vaccines which al
