I was a fulltime carer for my 20 year old son who had duchenne muscular dystrophy so i know a lot on looking after people
Over my son's life i have gained a lot of knowledge of his condition but also on other associated conditions that affect breathing ,swallowing ,mobility ,dexterity, bowel function and other such health issues ive experience in taking on complex care procedures and making observations to ensure the care and interventions were tailored to my son's changing needs i had to learn to use equipment such a feeding pumps, suction machines an non-evasive ventilation machines through the years i have built relationships with a variety of medical professionals, from different specialities so have first hand experience of the importance of good communication and team approach, so feel confident in being part of a multidisciplinary team meeting the needs of a diverse client group My unique life experience means i have gained a real insight in what living and caring for someone with a disability entails. The periods of extreme ill health, hospitalization, having to endure medical procedures and operations can have a massive impact on them and their family i feel having this lived experience gives me the perspective where a can truly understand and will make it easy for me to form compassionate and supportive relationships with clients and those close to them I also feel it is important not to focus solely on the restrictions in life somone with a health conditions has but to maximize the abilities they do have and make the most of life by giving them experiences interactions and opportunities that allow them to enjoy life.
I was my son's only carer for 20 years so i learned all stuff i know from from health professionals and within my home
