A Slinger is responsible for safely attaching loads to lifting equipment and directing the lifting operation.

• Inspect lifting accessories before use and ensure they are suitable for the load.
• Select the correct slings, shackles, hooks, and other lifting accessories for the task.
• Correctly attach and secure loads to the lifting equipment.
• Check the load is balanced, stable and properly supported before lifting.
• Establish and maintain a safe exclusion zone around the lifting operation.
• Give clear and recognised signals to the crane or lifting-equipment operator.
• Maintain clear communication with the operator throughout the lift.
• Conduct or assist with pre-lift checks and ensure the lifting plan is followed.
• Prevent unauthorised personnel from entering the lifting area.
• Stop the lifting operation immediately if conditions become unsafe.
• Ensure loads are landed safely and lifting accessories are removed correctly.

• Stop the vehicle immediately if they lose visual or verbal communication with the operator or identify a hazard.
• Never stand directly behind a reversing vehicle or between a vehicle and a fixed object.
• Use appropriate PPE, including high-visibility clothing as required by site rules.
• Follow the site's traffic management plan, risk assessments, and method statements.
• Report unsafe conditions, near misses, incidents, or damage to the appropriate supervisor.
• Ensure they are competent, trained and authorised to act as a banksman.
• Do not undertake other tasks while directing vehicle movements that could distract them from the operation.
• Carry out pre-start and daily checks before operating the telehandler.
• Inspect tyres, forks, attachments, hydraulics, boom, controls, safety devices, and other components.
• Report any defects immediately and do not operate defective equipment.
• Ensure they are appropriately trained, competent and authorised to operate the machine and attachments being used.
• Operate the telehandler in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and load charts.
• Confirm the load weight, dimensions, and centre of gravity before lifting.
• Ensure the correct attachment is selected and securely fitted.
• Never exceed the machine's rated capacity or safe working limits.
• Ensure the ground is suitable, stable, and capable of supporting the machine.

• Keep pedestrians and other workers outside the machine's operating area.
• Follow the site's traffic management plan, designated routes, and speed limits.
• Use a banksman where required, particularly when visibility is restricted or during difficult manoeuvring.
• Keep the load stable, secure, and as low as practicable when travelling.
• Never carry people unless the machine and approved attachment are specifically designed and authorised for personnel lifting.
• Do not leave a raised or suspended load unattended.
• Park the machine safely when not in use, lower the attachment, apply the parking brake, and isolate the machine as required.
• Follow the approved RAMS, lifting plan and site procedures.
• Stop work if conditions become unsafe or if the machine, load, or surround conditions change.
