My name is Leighton Smith I’m 58 years old a retired meter operative with 32 years experience in metering
SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY (SWALEC) (2007-PRESENT)
I’ve worked here for 8 years to present. My duties as a smart operative(meter operative) I worked as a standby engineer doing out of hours call outs fixing faults ranging from single no supply’s, 3 phase work and split phase work faulty key meters, 2 rate meters, single rate meters. In my daytime duties I carry out a vast array of working ranging from recertification work, installing single phase key meter, new installation work, gas inspection work.
I also fit 2 rate metering and 3 phase meters and I’m currently MOCCOPA qualified, MET 1 and CET 1 qualified. I’ve currently qualified my first aid training course also. I’ve also got my DNO authorization.
WESTERN POWER DISTRIBUTION (1997-2007)
I worked here as a meter operative. I worked in South Wales and in the South West as far as Cornwall working away from home. My duties included working as a standby engineer doing out of hours call outs fixing faults ranging from single no supply’s, 3 phase work and split phase work faulty key meters, 2 rate meters, single rate meters.
In my daytime duties I carried out a vast array of working ranging from recertification work, installing single phase key meter, new installation work, gas inspection work. I also fitted 2 rate metering and 3 phase meters. I worked on advanced meter installations, multi ways, factories etc.
HYDER PLC (1991-1997)
I worked here as a meter operative doing metering duties including CALMU meter, 3 phase metering, tangent metering and also all aspects of single phase work.
SOUTH WALES ELECTRICITY (SWALEC) (1988-1991)
I worked as a meter operative and as a GDA where I learned fault finding and fault location finding. I worked from the engineering side of the business and then transferred to metering where I stayed ever since.
H.M. ROYAL FORCES (1982-1988)
6 Years in British Army in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. I served in Northern Ireland where I done 3 tours on active service. I travelled to America and was trained in infantry skills and obtained the rank of Corporal. I learned skills in first aid, radio communications, photography and electronic counter measures.
