Active Responder Volunteer at Great Western Hospital-Swindon (2023-08 – 2024-09)
Long-term placement. Regularly supported healthcare staff and patients by carrying out tasks such as transporting patients around the hospital (using wheelchair training), topping up resources e.g. PPE, delivering blood samples, going on pharmacy rounds, guiding visitors and outpatients at reception on the weekends, doing morning and afternoon tea trolley rounds, and helping with lunches on several wards both in the hospital and the intermediate care centre.
Have been trained to cover areas such as ED and Children's ED, wards with dementia and/or end-of-life patients. Developed my communication skills with various levels of staff in the hospital by consulting my coordinators and professionals when a patient requires help in areas beyond my scope/job description. Normalise being able to properly advocate for a patient as well as talking freely to staff - overcome any hesitation I feel about speaking up.
Health Care Support Assistant at Great Western Hospital-Swindon, Wiltshire (2024-02 – 2024-02)
Participant at Gloucestershire Virtual Work Experience Programme-Gloucester, Gloucestershire (2024-01 – 2024-01)
Started by meeting with a surgical doctor before meeting the patient and discussed career paths and his experiences in the field e.g. medical school, specializing process. Met with an outpatient and learned about their journey being diagnosed with CDD (colonic diaphragm disease) and how COVID severely affected the quality of care she received. Along with 2 other students, I steered the Q&A session with the outpatient, asking about her experiences and how she felt about her treatment, being diagnosed incorrectly several times and having to wait over 4 years for a surgical procedure to be done.
Highlighted the importance of being a doctor/healthcare professional who listens to the patient especially when they feel that something is wrong as well as a major aspect of this field which is that sometimes certain symptoms can be misleading and ultimately end in the wrong conclusions being made especially when it comes to rare diseases which GPs may not have even encountered.
