This role is key to safe and efficient marine operations for the Ports of Liverpool, Heysham & the Manchester Ship Canal.
- Deputy to the Harbour Master (Statutory Role) Act as the legal Deputy to the Harbour Master, including taking full responsibility for the port as the Senior Manager on call out-of-hours.
- Pilotage Management Lead the Pilotage function, chairing the committee that handles all Pilot and PEC authorizations, including running the practical and theory exams. Overall management of pilot launch vessels and crew, prior to outsourcing.
- Marine Service Delivery Run the day-to-day Marine Services operations across the Mersey Sector, managing service contracts and keeping both contracted and third-party partners on the same page.
- Financial Oversight Directly manage the budgets for all local Marine Service contractors working within the sector.
- Safety Code Compliance (PMSC) Use formal risk assessments to keep the port compliant with the Port Marine Safety Code, ensuring our safety systems, directions, and emergency plans are fit for purpose.
- Operational Planning Plan and roll out new marine initiatives across the Mersey to improve how the port operates.
- Cross-Department Support Work alongside port control and commercial teams to make sure we hit our safety and business targets without one compromising the other.
- Incident Investigation Lead investigations into marine incidents across the sector, identifying what went wrong and making the calls on how to fix it.
- Internal Group Auditing Travel to other ports within the group to audit their operations and ensure they are meeting the mandatory safety standards of the PMSC. Now removed from remit.
- Project Leadership Take the lead on major port projects, working with both internal teams and external partners to get them over the line.
- Emergency Incident Command Act as the Incident Commander for oil spills and major marine emergencies, providing the calm, process-led leadership needed to protect the environment and keep the port open.

As Head of Department onboard MV Norbay, responsible for 17 officers and crew, I delivered the safe and efficient deck operations of the vessel.
- Crew Leadership & Emergency Response Led the deck crew, handling everything from daily training and discipline to commanding all emergency response teams during drills or live incidents.
- Deck & Safety Maintenance Full responsibility for the maintenance, inspection, and legal certification of all deck machinery and life-saving equipment.
- Pilotage & Bridge Operations Completed pilotage training in the Port of Dublin and provided senior bridge support and navigation across several UK and Irish ports.
- Vessel Stability & Cargo Planning Managed ship stability and deck space through fast-paced vehicle loading, ensuring the vessel was always safe to sail while maximizing revenue space.
- Budgetary Control Managed all onboard deck stores and equipment procurement with a sharp focus on keeping costs within the department's budget.
- Ship Safety & Security Officer Served as the designated onboard lead for safety and security, constantly monitoring risks for passengers and crew and changing procedures when needed to improve safety.
