Senior Nursing Officer - Orthopedic Emergency Department - National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu - Enugu state, Nigeria

Tertiary Health Institution. Reporting to Chief Nursing Officer. Period of notice: 4 weeks. Reason for leaving (if applicable): I am looking for a new opportunity to develop my skills and grow professionally while continuing to provide excellent patient care.

• Triage patients with fractures, dislocations and musculoskeletal trauma and prioritise care according to injury severity and clinical condition.
• Perform rapid ABCDE assessments on trauma patients and initiate immediate interventions for life threatening problems.
• Perform neurovascular assessments on injured limbs and monitor circulation, sensation, movement, swelling and pain for deterioration.
• Immobilise fractures and suspected fractures using splints, slabs, slings and other appropriate devices to prevent further injury.
• Assess acute orthopaedic pain, administer prescribed analgesia and evaluate the patients response to treatment.
• Provide initial wound care for open fractures and traumatic injuries using aseptic technique and monitor for bleeding and contamination.
• Perform venepuncture and peripheral cannulation and collect blood samples for urgent investigations and preoperative preparation.
• Administer prescribed intravenous fluids, antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis and monitor patients for adverse reactions.
• Recognise signs of compartment syndrome, neurovascular compromise and other limb threatening complications and escalate concerns urgently.
• Prepare and safely transfer patients for radiological investigations, theatre procedures and specialist orthopaedic review while maintaining appropriate immobilisation.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care and modify interventions according to changes in each patients condition.

• Outpatient Department (12 months): Performed initial assessments for 20 to 30 patients per clinic session, recording vital signs, height, weight, body mass index and presenting complaints using paper and electronic records.
• Prepared sterile trolleys for wound debridement, suture removal and ear syringing using aseptic non touch technique.
• Removed sutures, staples and wound clips using sterile equipment and assessed wounds for healing, infection and other complications.
• Administered prescribed vaccines and intramuscular depot injections and monitored patients for adverse reactions.
• Performed urinalysis using reagent dipsticks, identified abnormal findings and escalated concerns to clinicians.
• Dialysis Unit (12 months): Prepared and primed Fresenius 4008 haemodialysis machines, tubing, dialysate and blood lines before treatment.

• Operated manual defibrillators and automated external defibrillators during cardiac arrest and participated in advanced life support interventions.
