My previous roles working in schools, serving as a youth mentor, and working in retail have all played an important part in shaping how I interact with people today. Each experience has helped me build confidence, patience, and strong communication skills, while also teaching me how to adapt to different personalities and situations. Over time, these roles have strengthened my ability to connect with others in a genuine and positive way.
Working in schools gave me valuable insight into how people develop, learn, and respond to different forms of support. Being around students from a variety of backgrounds helped me understand that everyone communicates differently and may need different approaches. In that environment, patience and clear communication were essential.
Whether helping students stay focused, supporting them through challenges, or simply being someone they could talk to, I learned how important it is to create a space where people feel comfortable and understood. It also taught me to stay calm and professional, even in situations that require quick thinking or problem-solving.
My time as a youth mentor strengthened those skills even further. Mentoring required building trust and forming positive relationships with young people who often needed encouragement, guidance, or someone to listen to them. In that role, I learned that communication is not just about talking, but also about listening and understanding what someone might be going through.
Being able to support others, motivate them, and help them see their potential was incredibly rewarding. It also helped me develop empathy and emotional awareness, which are important when working with people from different walks of life. Through mentoring, I became more confident in guiding conversations, offering advice, and supporting individuals in a constructive way.
Working in retail added another layer to my experience with people. Retail environments are often fast-paced and require constant interaction with customers, colleagues, and managers. In this setting, I learned how to approach people confidently, remain friendly and professional, and handle a variety of situations.
From assisting customers with their needs to resolving problems or complaints, retail taught me how to stay calm under pressure and focus on finding solutions. It also improved my ability to read people quickly and adjust my communication style depending on who I was speaking with.
Retail also helped me strengthen teamwork skills. Working alongside colleagues toward shared goals taught me the importance of cooperation, reliability, and maintaining a positive attitude even during busy or stressful shifts. Being part of a team requires clear communication and mutual respect, which are qualities that I have carried into other areas of my life and work.
When I reflect on these experiences together, it becomes clear how much they have contributed to my personal and professional growth. Working in schools developed my patience and ability to support others in structured environments. Youth mentoring built my confidence in guiding and encouraging individuals while strengthening my listening and empathy skills. Retail helped me refine my communication, problem-solving, and adaptability in fast-moving situations with many different types of people.
All of these roles share one key element: people. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to interact with individuals of different ages, backgrounds, and personalities. Over time, this has made me more confident when meeting new people and better at building positive relationships. I have learned how important it is to be approachable, respectful, and understanding, whether someone needs support, assistance, or simply a friendly conversation.
These experiences have shaped the way I communicate today. I am comfortable speaking with different types of people, listening to their needs, and responding in a way that is helpful and respectful. They have also taught me the value of patience, empathy, and clear communication—qualities that are important in any environment where people work together.
Overall, my journey through working in schools, mentoring young people, and working in retail has helped me grow into someone who values connection, teamwork, and positive interaction. Each role has built upon the last, strengthening my confidence and ability to work with others effectively. The skills I have gained continue to influence how I approach conversations, challenges, and relationships, allowing me to contribute positively wherever I am working or engaging with people.
My professional experience includes working in schools, supporting young people as a youth mentor, and working in retail. Across these roles, I have developed strong communication and interpersonal skills by interacting with people from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. Working in schools and mentoring young people helped me build patience, empathy, and the ability to support and guide others, while my retail experience strengthened my confidence in customer service, problem-solving, and working in fast-paced environments.
Together, these roles have helped me become approachable, adaptable, and effective at building positive relationships with others.
