We are all on our own journeys, and as a qualified counselor it is my job to walk alongside clients and help them with a variety of issues, from stress to identity, from trauma to grief. Counselling offers us a look inside ourselves before we sit with clients, and I found so much of myself that was previously unknown through ongoing training. I curated my empathic nature and opened my mind to learning about other people, as well as psychological approaches, practices and modalities, from CBT to person-centered to solution-based.
I have recently suffered with my own neurodivergence and mental health crisis, hence having not worked with clients for a few years and am now hoping to get back to focussing on this career that I love.
Counsellor - Durham County Carers Support (DCCS)
(2020-01 - 2024-12)
We offered short term (6-8 sessions) work with clients. In this role I switched to telephone counselling services due to the pandemic. My clients were in caring roles, and we dealt with a lot of issues ranging from emotional fatigue to dealing with past trauma caused, in some cases, by their caree.
I was responsible for working with my supervisor and line manager to ensure safeguarding for carer and caree. I managed my own case load and organized my own appointments with clients, as well as needing to know if referral was necessary.
Student Counsellor - ARQ Darlington
(2018-01 - 2020-12)
While studying for my qualification, I did my placement here. We offered long-term counselling to community members, largely LGBTQ persons but not solely. Here I dealt with varying issues such as generalized anxiety, identity issues, trauma, guilt and loss.
I found the continued CPD and group supervision helped me to develop new ideas for ways to work with our clients. I also expirienced a few clients in crisis and learned important skills on how to create safety plans or connect them with crisis services.
