Hi, I'm Robert Aston! I'm a Clinical Coder for a GP Practice based in Leeds, UK. Having spent the better part of 15 years working within the NHS I've built a large and varied skillset, from assisting and guiding patients, managing the day to day running of a GP practice right through to maintenance of IT infrastructures…I was even the designated handyman for repairs in the building.
I reached a point where there wasn't really anything left to learn and I'd hit the ceiling of where I could develop.
So, I've set my sights on finding a new career. Doesn't matter the level of the role, or what experience I might lack; these are just stepping stones to develop and further skills to add to my repertoire.
Administrative Team Leader, Windmill Health Centre Leeds Jan 2009 - Feb 2018. I left full time education to work as an Administrator in a GP Practice at Windmill Health Centre. I learned to operate within a team where my responsibilities included manually phoning patients, hospitals and pharmacies.
The Summarising of patients medical history including diagnosis, vaccinations and prescription onto the patient’s electronic records. Within a year I was promoted to Administrative Team Leader where I supervised the running of the Administration Team, delegating workloads, dealing with the Practice Management and providing support, reinforcement to the team. During my time as Team Leader I also took on the responsibilities of handling all IT infrastructure and processes across the site, supporting colleagues with any problems they encountered.
IT Manager, Dr S Laybourn & Partners Leeds Feb 2018 - Jun 2022. I began work as an IT Manager at Dr S.Laybourn and Partners after the position was recommended to me by a colleague. I managed all the technology infrastructure across two practice sites, ranging from everyday IT issues to building a new practice website for patients, upgrading all hardware and tech security and systems between both sites. I was promoted just under a year into working at the Practice to Finance Manager on-top of my IT role.
Through this additional role I supported Practice Management in the day to day running of both surgery sites. I was also given the responsibility of auditing and claiming all Practice expenses/earnings through CQRS and Open Exeter and dealing with Payroll, Reconciliation and Financial Analysis.
Customer Solutions Specialist, Age Partnership Leeds Jul 2022 - May 2023. My work within Age Partnership involved speaking with existing and potential clients to negotiate Equity Release, Mortgages and Pensions for the over 50s. This would involve both inbound and outbound queries from a variety of methods such as phone calls, emails etc.
Travel, Aug 2023 - Nov 2023. I took a few months off from working to travel.
Clinical Coder, Windmill Health Centre Leeds Jan 2024 - Present. I was offered the role of Clinical Coder at the Windmill Health Centre on my return from my travels thanks to past experience working within the Practice. Their coding team was falling heavily behind workload wise and I was brought in to get the work back up-to date which it now is; working on a day by day work load basis
