I worked as a technical writer and editor for a large American software company for nearly 17 years. I wrote customer-facing documentation such as user guides and release notes. I pride myself on making complex topics understandable by a non-technical audience.
As Lead Editor, I was responsible for our writing standards and style guide. I trained our writers on our standards and tools and enforced those standards where necessary. I wrote in DITA XML, using IXIASOFT CCMS (recently acquired by Madcap).
I loved editing content written by our writers around the world, for all of whom English was their second language. Having Philosophy as my major subject in my degree has been invaluable in my career as a technical writer because Philosophy requires rigour in identifying and correcting ambiguities and logical inconsistencies.
In tests of verbal intelligence, I come in the top 2% of the population.
