I currently work as a scrub nurse in a high-pressure cardiothoracic theatre setting. This role involves supporting complex surgical procedures and working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists and operating department practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and efficient patient care throughout the perioperative pathway. My responsibilities include preparing and maintaining sterile fields, anticipating surgical needs and ensuring all instruments and equipment are available and managed safely.
I prioritise patient safety and dignity while fostering effective teamwork and communication within the theatre. Working in cardiac surgery demands sustained concentration, adaptability and composure in complex and time-sensitive situations. This role has honed my situational awareness, communication skills and emotional resilience as I support patients undergoing major surgery.
I've gained a deeper understanding of anxiety and vulnerability in clinical settings and the importance of providing reassurance and emotional steadiness alongside technical care. This experience has strengthened my ability to collaborate under pressure while maintaining compassionate patient-centred care.

Theatre Healthcare Assistant - Renacres Hospital, Halsall, Ormskirk - Halsall, Ormskirk
(2019-06 - 2021)
I worked full-time as a theatre healthcare assistant at Renacres Hospital, where I worked alongside nurses, ODPs and doctors to ensure operating lists ran as safely as possible for patients. I assisted nurses and ODPs in preoperative theatre set-up, whilst assisting the rest of the team peri-operatively by acquiring extra supplementaries or setting up equipment in a timely manner, and I supported patients undergoing procedures under local anesthetic to ensure their safety and comfort. My experience has allowed me to develop skills in teamwork, communication (both with my colleagues and with patients) and problem solving, and I have learned how to cope under pressure.
ICU Clinical Support Worker - Southport Hospital - Southport, Merseyside
(2020-04 - 2020-06)
Whilst working at Renacres Hospital during the pandemic, I was re-deployed to the local district hospital to assist in the intensive care unit by working day and night shifts into a role that I was unfamiliar with. I worked as a clinical support worker assisting nurses with the day-to-day care of patients including rolls, washing, ensuring all clinical areas were efficiently stocked and helping vulnerable patients by offering comfort and support. This role helped to improve my flexibility and ability to adapt to a new environment as the ward was very dynamic and quick paced due to the COVID-19 crisis.
I experienced firsthand the stress of the uncertainty around different intervention strategies and their effectiveness in aiding the improvement towards patients' health and wellbeing, for example the use of proning patients to help with their saturation levels. I believe this positively affected my confidence and courage levels as I was able to contribute towards providing the best possible care to patients. The ability to see evidence-based practice firsthand helped me in gaining insight into the important role all healthcare professionals have in providing person centered care.

I enjoyed this aspect of the job as I was able to develop my leadership and teamwork skills and learned to manage several tasks at once.
