My passion for Clinical Psychology stems from a deep belief that every individual's experiences, thoughts, and emotions deserve to be understood with empathy and compassion. A quote that has always resonated with me is, "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" To me, this perfectly encapsulates the essence of psychology. It reminds us that thoughts, emotions, and psychological experiences, although often invisible to others, are profoundly real and can have a significant impact on every aspect of a person's life.
This perspective inspired me to pursue a degree in Psychology and continues to shape my approach to patient care.
I recently graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, achieving a 2:1 classification. Throughout my degree, I developed a strong foundation in psychological theory, research methods, ethics, and evidence-based practice, while further strengthening my ambition to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology.
Alongside my studies, I have spent the past two years working as an NHS Bank Receptionist across Rotherham Hub Services and the Minor Eye Clinic. Although my role is administrative, it has provided me with invaluable frontline experience within the NHS and a unique insight into the realities of patient care. As the first point of contact for patients, I have come to appreciate that every interaction, no matter how brief, has the potential to influence a person's healthcare experience.
Many patients arrive feeling anxious, distressed, overwhelmed, or uncertain, and I have learned the importance of creating a calm, welcoming, and supportive environment while communicating with empathy, professionalism, and respect.
My responsibilities include triaging patients, managing appointments, responding to enquiries both in person and over the telephone, maintaining accurate electronic patient records, and working collaboratively with GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, and wider multidisciplinary teams to ensure the smooth delivery of clinical services. Working within such fast-paced environments has strengthened my communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills, while teaching me to remain calm under pressure, prioritise effectively, and adapt my communication style to meet the individual needs of each patient.
This role has also allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Working within primary care has deepened my understanding of the complex relationship between physical and psychological health, highlighting how mental wellbeing can influence a person's presentation, engagement with treatment, and overall quality of life. I have regularly encountered patients experiencing anxiety, depression, emotional distress, and crisis, enabling me to develop confidence in communicating sensitively with vulnerable individuals while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
Where appropriate, I have signposted patients to relevant services, including RDaSH and the Crisis Team, reinforcing the importance of early intervention and ensuring individuals are connected with the support they need.
Perhaps most importantly, my experience within the NHS has taught me that effective healthcare extends beyond treating symptoms. It is about listening without judgement, building trust, recognising each person's unique circumstances, and ensuring every individual feels heard, respected, and valued. These experiences have only strengthened my aspiration to become a Clinical Psychologist, where I hope to combine scientific understanding with genuine human connection to support people through some of the most challenging periods of their lives.
I am a highly motivated, compassionate, and reliable individual with a strong commitment to developing a career within the NHS psychological services. I am eager to build upon both my academic knowledge and practical NHS experience by contributing to high-quality, evidence-based care while continuing to learn from experienced clinicians. I am passionate about making a meaningful difference to the lives of others and am excited by the opportunity to continue developing the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to become an effective, reflective, and compassionate Clinical Psychologist.
Working within NHS Hub Services and the Minor Eye Clinic has provided me with invaluable frontline experience in delivering patient-centred care within a busy multidisciplinary healthcare environment. As the first point of contact for patients, I have developed the ability to communicate with empathy, professionalism, and sensitivity, recognising that each interaction can have a meaningful impact on a patient's healthcare experience. This role has strengthened my understanding of the relationship between physical and psychological wellbeing and reinforced the importance of compassion, active listening, and effective communication when supporting individuals with a wide range of health concerns.
Working within a luxury retail environment enabled me to develop exceptional interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills through delivering personalised customer experiences. The role required active listening, empathy, and the ability to quickly establish rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds while working collaboratively within a high-performing team to achieve shared objectives.
