A&E nurses are often the first point of contact for patients as they enter a hospital setting. Primarily based in the emergency department of hospitals, as a qualified A&E nurse encountered a plethora of conditions in patients that are in an extremely critical state. The role of an A&E nurse is a highly pressurised one, where no two days are the same.
Assessed patients in the emergency department by taking vital signs and talking to the patient about what has happened. After determining what the issue is, directed the patient to the correct place to get the right treatment for their condition. Sound reasoned decisions made quickly.
Gained extended skills and knowledge of dealing with patients being brought in by the police under 136. This is when they have presented with mental health issues which can be quite challenging as their behaviour can escalate quite quickly. Managed up to 3 patients who have come as 136 patients whilst also having patients who have come in for their general health, each one presenting different concern.
Became more observant in picking up signs of escalation and prepared for unpredictable situations by ensuring the right protocols are followed which keep the patient and staff in mind and deliver care effectively. Gained experienced and skills to adept at diffusing tension and keeping a cool head in demanding situations. In a position of lead nurse in coordinating the urgent care department where delegated to staff and liaised with doctors to ensure that patients are seen in the most appropriate time frame and things are running smoothly within the department.
