Senior Buyer / Plant Buyer Manager - Civils Company (unnamed) - UK

In October 2024 I was made redundant along with several other employees of Building Associates due to downturn in work. Exploring the market of what was available I was offered roles in the United States of America and Turk & Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. However, due to personal circumstances I opted to stay in the UK and join a civils company initially as their senior buyer, and manage the plant buyer due to their lack of experience.

With this role, I've been setting up rates, and agreeing rebates and leading the procurement process, with the day to day buying and also sending out enquiries to national suppliers and local suppliers for tenders we would be pricing, for main contractors such as Winvic, TSL, Keepmoat homes to name a few

• Manage high-pressure, fast-paced procurement cycles, handling last-minute orders/changes.
• Negotiate pricing, manage supplier relationships, and monitor stock levels to support project deadlines and cost control.
• Took on additional responsibility for plant purchasing following internal restructuring, expanding role from materials buying to cover all site procurement needs.
• Collaborated with the estimator on tender preparations, providing accurate material sourcing, pricing, and availability information to support competitive and compliant bids.
• Work closely with Directors, project managers and site teams to ensure timely delivery of equipment and materials to multiple active sites.

Company Buyer - Building Associates

(2022-01 - 2024-10)

Joining Building Associates, I was able gain valuable experiences within the housing/residential building sector. These new and existing duties would include;

• Purchase goods, materials, or services in line with specified cost, quality, and delivery targets
• Sending out enquires to Subcontractors on behalf of the contract managers, for various trades in line with project requirements.
• Compiled and presented quotes to the Contracts Manager, enabling informed decision-making on subcontractor selection and order allocation.
• Being a smaller company, I had the task of having to juggle with choosing the right suppliers on certain projects and other suppliers on others ensuring our credit wouldn't be exceeded.
• Overseeing orders for everything from Bricks/Blocks, insulation, to doors, skirting and ironmongery which was a new challenge compared to what I've been previously used to.
• Providing my MD with a weekly spreadsheet of all plant/tool hire
• Ensure continuous supply of required goods and materials and communicate any potential longer lead time materials which may pose a risk or impact on the company's operations.
• Research and evaluate areas of opportunity and reduce costs where/if possible.
• Regular meetings with the Contract Managers and deliver briefs, updates and reports as and when required.
• Negotiate rates, rebates and terms of business with suppliers and review opportunities to make business savings utilising negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods.
• Assess and evaluate suppliers and undertake performance reviews.
• Explore alternate sources for goods and materials if possible (Some projects materials are specified and can't deviate from the finishing schedule)
• Assess quotations from potential suppliers.
• Prepare purchase orders in line with final negotiations with selected suppliers and in line with organisational targets and requirements.
• Undertake research on and evaluate existing and new suppliers.
• Contact suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery, or invoice issues.

Materials Buyer - Galamast

When working for Galamast I was part of a team of 3 buyers. The company is involved in multiple forms of construction projects, all of which I'm involved in. Using my experience, and capabilities to manage my workload in this very busy environment, as well as being able to work well under pressure during the Covid 19 Pandemic, as we continued to operate.

Toward the end of my time with Galamast, I took over as the most senior buyer and was guiding the new buyers, with how we operate, who to order from, and where the money can be saved.

• Out of the team of 3 buyers, I placed around 90% of all orders
• Create Call off orders for bulk materials (Concrete, Aggregates, Keyblok etc) for each site
• Being able adapt to each project (Groundwork/civils 70%, Shopfitting/refurbishment 25% for Mcdonalds, Housebuilding/Residential and surfacing 5%)
• Managing my work load for all sites, (at least 15 at one time), which would result in producing up to 80-100 orders some days.
• Raise any queries with any invoices not matching Purchase orders/delivery notes.
• Working with limited suppliers during the 1st lockdown and adapting to new longer lead times and procedures.
• Chasing deliveries in a timely matter
• Review with the senior buyer supplier performances
• Ensuring all sites have the latest Covid PPE

Project Buyer (Contract) - Graham Construction

(2015-01 - 2016-01)

I started working for Graham Construction who were initially awarded and involved in the Dover Western Docks Revival project. Where I was brought in as the project buyer for the entire project. Although a large value and long term project I would have been the only buyer for this, and despite the scale of the project I'm someone who enjoys a challenge, and would be introduced into sourcing Marine plant for the first time which was exciting, as well as materials and plant I was already familiar with.

Unfortunately due to a query with the tender/contract, Graham's had to retender for this project and were not awarded the contract second time round, thus I was unable to see through this project as it had been awarded to another contractor. However in my final months I was directly with the buying for the demolition works/ height reduction of the POWP (Prince of Wales Pier). This would involve purchasing materials and hiring of external plant.

As well as hiring external plant I would have to monitor of all the internal plant that Graham Construction own, put a valid market rate which we would then charge back to the client. Due to the unfortunate circumstances with the Dover Western Do

Buyer & Contracts Coordinator - Walker Construction (UK) Ltd

Since returning to work I have been working for Walker Construction (UK) Ltd where I worked as a Buyer & Contracts Coordinator, for its Ross Way division.

• Creating order numbers on every purchase/hire made
