I started my apprenticeship in 2001 working towards my SVQ. I carried out various jobs in my apprenticeship leading me to be out running jobs before my 4th year started. I gained my SVQ and have remained in employment with the company since.
Once qualified I have worked on a large variety of jobs at home and working away for long spells. These would differ between domestic, commercial and industrial environments. I mainly work on industrial jobs and some of my duties include the installation of cable trays, SWA cables, glanding cables, terminating panels and then testing and commissioning, all done following the correct RAMS, procedures and SSOW, making sure all work is carried out in a safe and timely fashion.
I have worked extensively on MOD and nuclear sites including radiologically controlled areas where I am security cleared. My duties on these sites include installing fire alarms, comms, instrumentation and control panels, terminations by following drawings, then working through commissioning schedules alongside the engineers to sign off the workpacks for handover. Maintenance Electrician - Subsea 7 (on hire from G and A Barnie) - Wick

In this role I was hired out to Subsea 7 at their pipeline yard in Caithness. I was picked to go on hire due to my knowledge of Subsea 7 procedures and the site in general as I have worked on this site many times over the years on general jobs and then more challenging jobs like installing the multi million pound roller system for carrying pipes into the fab shop or the replacement of the hydraulic winch to a motor driven one that assists the boats in towing the bundle to the designated oil field, both of these jobs I working with electricians from different countries so I had to adapt to some tasks that needed to be carried out differently. During my time as a maintenance electrician I was tasked with preventive and reactive maintenance.
This gave me experience in high pressure situations as the production of the pipelines is time sensitive so repairs had to be carried out as quick as possible, these repairs included the pipe roller system, overhead cranes and general faults. I would also have to issue permits and carry out isolations for any work carried out by subcontractors.
Supervisor Electrician - G and A Barnie - Wick

My current role is as supervisor to teams of electricians and apprentices. I have been supervisor on many large multi million pound jobs including schools and substations. Most recently a unique switching substation for HVDC link from Shetland.
I am tasked with delegating jobs to electricians and dealing with any problems that may arise, I solve these either on my own or going to the appropriate person to come up with a plan of action to solve it. I do the daily tool box talks, issue permits and as a company appointed person carry out isolations using lock out procedures and following the SSOW. I have to liaise with other trades including mechanical and HVAC to make sure the job is going smoothly and no clashes or problems arise and if they do they are dealt with in a timely fashion.
I liaise with project managers and other supervisors in daily briefs to make sure the job is on track and we are all working together. I use a look ahead approach in terms of materials and labour so we are always one or two weeks ahead so we can resolve queries or material shortages so that the job is not held up.
