"Antioch Review Author to Appear in
Pushcart Prize XLII: Best of the Small Presses (2018 edition)
Author John R. Nelsonās piece āFunny Bird Sexā will appear in The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses (2018 edition). Nelsonās work appeared in the Winter 2016 issue āāFunny Bird Sexā and other Miscellaneous Talesā of The Antioch Review.
"Editor Robert S. Fogarty noted:
"Our lead essay. . .was about birds and one of their essential activitiesācopulation. At first glance that might suggest one thing, but on closer examination, our author, John Nelson, opines that it is many, varied, poignant, comical, and just like human copulation.
"Nelson resides in Gloucester, Massachusetts and is active in bird conservation and nature education. His āBirds of the New Worldā essay appeared in the Winter 2015 āChance Encountersā issue of The Antioch Review. Nelsonās essay āBirds and Warā appeared in the Fall 2015 issue of The Massachusetts Review and The Missouri Review published his essay on the fallibility of observation and memory, āI Saw What I Said I Saw: Witnesses to Birds and Crimesā in their Winter 2015 issue. Nelson is also the author of Cultivating Judgment, a sourcebook for teaching critical thinking skills across the curriculum.
"The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses is the most honored literary project in America. Founded by independent spirits and published since 1976, it is āone of the last bastions of non-corporate writing.ā*
Each year, magazines and small book editors submit works for consideration in Pushcartās annual anthology. Publication in these pages is coveted and respected in the small press literary world.
