Medical surgical ward experience. 500 bedded JCI Accredited hospital. Nurse patient ratio 1:6 to 1:8.
- Admitting and discharging patients
- Vital observations (blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar level, oxygen saturation)
- Accurate and appropriate documentation of every activity carried on patient including medical administration
- Providing preoperative care to patients, witnessing consent signing, allaying anxiety and pain management
- Assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating individualized care plans
- Caring for unconscious patients
- Advocating for patients during rounds, setting trolleys and assisting the doctor with procedures such as wound management and drain care
- Inserting intravenous cannula
- Assisting, supervising, and helping students attached in my unit in preparation for their clinical assignments
- Ward stock management and control to ensure unlimited availablity of material resources in the ward
- Identifying patients and families in need of counseling services in a private and confidential manner
- Assessing patients risk of developing pressure ulcers and providing care to prevent them
- Two hourly turns of bed ridden patients and pressure care
- Ensuring infection control measures are maintained all the time using standard and universal precautions as required
- Pre and post management of angiogram and angioplasty patients
- Assessment of wound site and aseptic dressings of wound
- Intravenous fluid administration and urinary catheter output monitoring
- Ensuring effective administration of all medicines
- Feeding of patients both orally and through NG tube
- Bathing and grooming of patients, both bedridden and mobile
- Oral care and catheter care
- Management of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia
- Monitoring strict intake and output of patients, regulating IV fluids, during blood and blood products transfusions not to over load patients
- Administration of oxygen (nasal prongs, facemask, hfnc, nebulization)
- Thorough neurological assessment, cardiological and physical assessment of both conscious and unconscious patients
- GCS monitoring
- Working collaboratively with other medical team members i.e physiotherapist, dietician, radiographers etc to achieve quality of care
