System designdatabase scalingRubyRuby on RailsSinatra
About
Senior backend engineer with nearly six years building, scaling, and operating Ruby on Rails applications and REST APIs.
Strong in system design and database scaling: PostgreSQL read replicas and query tuning, Sidekiq and Redis background processing, microservices extraction, and AWS. Owned architecture, CI/CD, releases, incident response, and reliability for an OTT platform serving nine client platforms at more than 100M requests/day.
Experience
Senior Software Engineer at Saranyu Technologies (2024-09 – 2026-07)
- Owned backend architecture, releases, and reliability for a Ruby on Rails OTT platform serving nine client platforms, running ETV Win at more than 100M requests/day on a 100 GB PostgreSQL database.
- Carried features and fixes across per-client copies of the Rails OTT codebase, each brand running its own database, configuration, and diverging feature set, where the request auth token resolved the application record that set the PostgreSQL schema and CMS or front-end visibility, with catalog and media in MongoDB alongside the subscription, entitlement, and B2B partner APIs.
- Cut a core analytics report from 15 minutes to 4 minutes, a 73% reduction, by moving reporting off a saturated PostgreSQL read replica onto Elasticsearch, and moved bulk CSV exports to Sidekiq background jobs.
- Re-architected watch history, the platform's highest-volume write path, from Rails into a Sinatra microservice on PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Sidekiq, improving processing 10x in production and cutting peak scaling cost.
- Built a Firebase Cloud Messaging platform for 1M device tokens with de-duplication, audience targeting, and scheduled Sidekiq delivery.
- Implemented a Redis-backed atomic rate limiter with token-count reservations and jittered retries for stable throughput under load.
- Integrated Razorpay, Stripe, and CCAvenue payments with reconciliation, coupons, plan stacking, invoicing, and idempotency, and built the cross-gateway status verification path that activates an order paid at the gateway but left inactive in the platform.
- Retrofitted Razorpay Subscriptions autopay onto a one-off purchase schema without disturbing revenue reporting, verified by a live scheduled renewal in production.
- Reworked publishing from Delayed Job to Sidekiq so publish dates and attribution survived later edits, closing a recurring client escalation; replaced a manual post-transcoding step with an event-driven Ruby AWS Lambda, triggered from S3 through an EventBridge rule, that corrected codec tags and audio group references in HLS and DASH manifests.
- Built a platform-aware advertising system across nine client platforms covering pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll, and pause ads, frequency and suppression rules, VMAP manifests, and Google IMA tags.
- Launched Sanskriti end to end: data migration, client identity, storage and transcoding moved from AWS S3 to Google Cloud Storage, and Stripe; took over Tarang Plus live with a database migration and iOS subscription updates.
- As sole engineer on the rewrite, migrated the legacy Rails OTT API to Node.js and Fastify, choosing a modular monolith of domain modules (controller, service, repository) over layer-first and microservice designs, and reaching pre-production response parity across catalog, search, authentication, and subscription APIs, where a baseline-endpoint load benchmark measured roughly 60x the throughput of the Rails stack.
- Cut that migration's scope 60%, from 729 APIs to 290, by mapping consumer call sites across CMS, web, mobile, and TV codebases before excluding unused endpoints.
- Established CI/CD quality gates in GitHub Actions, making RuboCop a protected-branch merge gate alongside ERB Lint, Brakeman, bundler-audit, Reek, Gitleaks, and SimpleCov across four previously unchecked projects.
- Upgraded the application to Ruby 3 and Rails 7 on AWS Graviton EC2, resolving compatibility issues and restoring production PostgreSQL and MongoDB data.
- Led on-call incident response and root cause analysis for entitlement, access-control, and data-integrity issues.
- Drove feature planning and delivery across staging, pre-production, and production, breaking features into tasks and tracking them through the backend developers assigned, mentoring a junior engineer, and conducting 20+ technical interviews for backend hiring.
Software Engineer at Cybrowse Digital Solutions (2020-12 – 2024-09)
- Modernized a production golf social and booking platform from a Rails 1.2-era codebase to Rails 5, replacing unmaintained gems and an abandoned search library, and rebuilt the interface across five product areas.
- Launched the platform in a second country from the same codebase with locale-prefixed routing and country-specific currency, payment gateway, content, and email templates.
- Built an inter-organization record-request platform with hierarchical access control, restricted-record blocking, SMS escalation, immutable history, and turnaround reporting, replacing per-screen filters with one organization-derived visibility rule.
- Built three administration modules (hospital, clinic, and corporate) for a Neo4j-backed healthcare platform, including role-scoped management, appointment APIs, Zoom consultations, prescriptions, and Razorpay payment capture.
- Delivered REST APIs for iOS and Android clients covering profiles, groups, leaderboards, feeds, and scheduled push notifications, defining contracts with mobile teams and documenting them in Swagger.
- Built merchant, deals, and cashback modules for a payments administration platform, plus a landing-page builder with inline editing, split testing, and RSpec / Capybara coverage.
