Java Web Developer

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join an international engineering team developing large-scale backend services.

This is a hands-on senior position for an engineer who can take ownership of backend design and development. You will be responsible for translating requirements into technical designs, building secure and scalable APIs, and supporting the team through implementation, code reviews, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the basic design and development of Java backend applications
• Translate business and system requirements into practical technical designs
• Design, develop, and maintain secure RESTful APIs
• Build scalable services using Java, Spring Boot, and Spring Framework
• Review code and provide technical guidance to other engineers
• Design and optimize relational database structures and SQL queries
• Containerize and deploy backend services using Docker
• Apply appropriate design patterns to create maintainable and reusable code
• Collaborate with cross-functional and international teams
• Improve application security, performance, scalability, and reliability

Required Experience

• 5+ years of backend development experience, primarily using Java
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Spring Framework
• Experience owning or leading basic design, technical design, or backend architecture
• Strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs
• Practical knowledge of application security and secure coding practices
• Strong experience with relational databases and SQL
• Hands-on experience with Docker and containerized services
• Good understanding of object-oriented design and common software design patterns
• Experience using Git and working in an Agile development environment
• Business-level English communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in an international engineering team

Preferred Experience

• Experience developing applications on AWS
• Experience with microservices and distributed systems
• Previous experience leading technical design or mentoring engineers
• Experience supporting high-traffic or business-critical production systems
• Currently residing in Japan with a valid work visa
